He describes how the system quickly developed difficulties and caused the tragic famine in China from 1959 to 1961. It is that two-year period that he focuses on, describing and analyzing the commune experiment at its peak, before it began to be modified then eventually abolished along with most other communist institutions by Deng Xiaoping after Mao's death in 1976.
