Book Description
Colonel Cathcart, as he was then, was assigned to the court of Russia just before Napoleon launched his massive assault in 1812. He attached himself to the Emperor Alexander’s suite and followed the war closely as the French struggled toward Moscow and, as the remnants, suffered upon marching back in the shattering cold of the winter. Colonel Cathcart saw and recorded in this book what few believed possible - Napoleon thoroughly defeated by his own hubris and hundreds of miles of snow covered desert. He marched on toward the climactic battles for the possession of Germany in 1813, with Napoleon restricted to the boundaries of France following the bloody battle of Leipzig. Colonel Cathcart recorded all he saw at head-quarters and beyond in the field and wrote his history of the campaigns shortly before his death in 1854 in the Crimean War. Accompanying his well-written text are numerous maps of the engagements and theatres. Author — General Sir George Cathcart (1794-1854) Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in London, J. Murray, 1850. Original Page Count – xv and 383 pages. Illustrations — 15 maps and plans

Napoleon and the Struggle for Germany: Volume 1, The War of Liberation, Spring 1813

Napoleon and the Struggle for Germany: Volume 1, The War of Liberation, Spring 1813 PDF Author: Michael V. Leggiere
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 131629983X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 501

Book Description
This is the first comprehensive history of the campaign that determined control of Germany following Napoleon's catastrophic defeat in Russia. Michael V. Leggiere reveals how, in the spring of 1813, Prussia, the weakest of the great powers, led the struggle against Napoleon as a war of national liberation. Using German, French, British, Russian, Austrian and Swedish sources, he provides a panoramic history that covers the full sweep of the battle for Germany from the mobilization of the belligerents, strategy, and operations to coalition warfare, diplomacy, and civil-military relations. He shows how Russian war weariness conflicted with Prussian impetuosity, resulting in the crisis that almost ended the Sixth Coalition in early June. In a single campaign, Napoleon drove the Russo–Prussian army from the banks of the Saale to the banks of the Oder. The Russo–Prussian alliance was perilously close to imploding, only to be saved at the eleventh-hour by an armistice.

Radetzky

Book Description
History remembers Wellington's defeat of Napoleon, but has forgotten the role of Field Marshal Radetzky in the battles which led to Napoleon's abdication and first exile in 1814. As Chief of Staff to the allied coalition of 1813-14, Radetzky determined the shape of the most decisive campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars by creating the strategy that defeated the Corsican in Germany and then France. Neither Russia nor Prussia had been able to overcome Napoleon in battle and it took the brilliant diplomacy of Metternich and the military genius of Radetzky to ensure victory over the Emperor. In short, the Austrian contribution decisively tipped the balance against Napoleon - a fact which has always been overlooked by historians. It was Radetzky, too, at the age of eighty-two, who defeated the Italians in 1848 and 1849 and thus saved Europe once again from the prospect of international war and revolution. The wars Radetzky fought - and won - throughout his extensive military career were of the greatest possible significance in European history, yet today, he is almost forgotten - remembered only in the music of the Radetzky March, dedicated to him by Johann Strauss the elder. In this, the first biography of Radetzky to be published in English, Alan Sked paints a vivid picture of an exceptional, yet neglected commander of genius in a book which will be fascinating reading for enthusiasts of military and modern European history.

Book Description
The first comprehensive history of the decisive Fall Campaign of 1813, which determined control of Central Europe following Napoleon's catastrophic defeat in Russia the previous year. Using German, French, British, Russian, Austrian and Swedish sources, Michael V. Leggiere provides a panoramic history which covers the full sweep of the struggle in Germany. He shows how Prussia, the weakest of the Great Powers, led the struggle against Napoleon and his empire. By reconstructing the principal campaigns and operations in Germany, the book reveals how the defeat of Napoleon in Germany was made possible by Prussian victories. In particular, it features detailed analysis of the strategy, military operations, and battles in Germany that culminated with the epic four-day Battle of Nations at Leipzig and Napoleon's retreat to France. This study not only highlights the breakdown of Napoleon's strategy in 1813, but constitutes a fascinating study in coalition warfare, international relations, and civil-military relations.
