Book Description
(Cont.) geometry to the gas-phase devices were fitted with platinum coated foam materials of various porosity and surface area. For near stoichiometric propane-air mixtures, exit gas temperatures approaching 1100 K were achieved at mass flow rates in excess of 0.35 g/s. This corresponds to a power density of approximately 1200 MW/m3; an 8.5-fold increase over the maximum power density achieved for gas-phase propane-air combustion. Low order models including simple time-scale analyses and a one-dimensional steady-state plug flow reactor model, were developed to elucidate the underlying physics and to identify important design parameters. High power density catalytic microcombustors were found to be limited by the diffusion of fuel species to the active surface, while substrate porosity and surface area-to-volume ratio were the dominant design variables. Experiments and modeling suggest that with adequate thermal management, power densities in excess of 1500 MW/m3 and efficiencies over 90% are possible within the microengine pressure loss constraint and the material limits of the catalyst. A materials characterization study of the catalyst and its substrate revealed that metal diffusion and catalyst agglomeration were likely failure modes.

Microscale Combustion and Power Generation

Microscale Combustion and Power Generation PDF Author: Christopher Cadou
Publisher: Momentum Press
ISBN: 1606503081
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 720

Book Description
Recent advances in microfabrication technologies have enabled the development of entirely new classes of small-scale devices with applications in fields ranging from biomedicine, to wireless communication and computing, to reconnaissance, and to augmentation of human function. In many cases, however, what these devices can actually accomplish is limited by the low energy density of their energy storage and conversion systems. This breakthrough book brings together in one place the information necessary to develop the high energy density combustion-based power sources that will enable many of these devices to realize their full potential. Engineers and scientists working in energy-related fields will find: • An overview of the fundamental physics and phenomena of microscale combustion; • Presentations of the latest modeling and simulation techniques for gasphase and catalytic micro-reactors; • The latest results from experiments in small-scale liquid film, microtube, and porous combustors, micro-thrusters, and micro heat engines; • An assessment of the additional research necessary to develop compact and high energy density energy conversion systems that are truly practical.

IUTAM Symposium on Flow Control and MEMS PDF Author: Jonathan F. Morrison
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1402068581
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 456

Book Description
The Symposium brought together many of the world’s experts in fluid mechanics, microfabrication and control theory to discover the synergy that can lead to real advances and perhaps find ways in which collaborative projects may proceed. The high profile meeting was attended by keynote speakers who are leaders in their fields. A key driver was the improvement in flow efficiency to reduce drag, and thereby emissions arising from transport. About 65 papers were presented.

Supercapacitor Design and Applications

Supercapacitor Design and Applications PDF Author: Zoran Stevic
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 9535127489
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 192

Book Description
In this book, authors investigated asymmetric and symmetric supercapacitor configurations for different electrode materials. Besides the already standard activated carbon (AC), studies were done with other materials and technologies for their preparation and activation. Also, the research info was presented with different electrolytes in order to obtain a higher capacitance and potential window, with as small as possible serial resistance. Achieved high performance enables wide application, and some of the new applications (spacecraft power systems, powering heart pacemakers and wireless sensors) are also described in this book.

The Coen & Hamworthy Combustion Handbook

The Coen & Hamworthy Combustion Handbook PDF Author: Stephen Londerville
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 143987333X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 565

Book Description
The rigorous treatment of combustion can be so complex that the kinetic variables, fluid turbulence factors, luminosity, and other factors cannot be defined well enough to find realistic solutions. Simplifying the processes, The Coen & Hamworthy Combustion Handbook provides practical guidance to help you make informed choices about fuels, burners, and associated combustion equipment—and to clearly understand the impacts of the many variables. Editors Stephen B. Londerville and Charles E. Baukal, Jr, top combustion experts from John Zink Hamworthy Combustion and the Coen Company, supply a thorough, state-of-the-art overview of boiler burners that covers Coen, Hamworthy, and Todd brand boiler burners. A Refresher in Fundamentals and State-of-the-Art Solutions for Combustion System Problems Roughly divided into two parts, the book first reviews combustion engineering fundamentals. It then uses a building-block approach to present specific computations and applications in industrial and utility combustion systems, including those for Transport and introduction of fuel and air to a system Safe monitoring of the combustion system Control of flows and operational parameters Design of a burner/combustion chamber to achieve performance levels for emissions and heat transfer Avoidance of excessive noise and vibration and the extension of equipment life under adverse conditions Coverage includes units, fluids, chemistry, and heat transfer, as well as atomization, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), noise, auxiliary support equipment, and the combustion of gaseous, liquid, and solid fuels. Significant attention is also given to the formation, reduction, and prediction of emissions from combustion systems. Each chapter builds from the simple to the more complex and contains a wealth of practical examples and full-color photographs and illustrations. Practical Computations and Applications for Industrial and Utility Combustion Systems A ready reference and refresher, this unique handbook is designed for anyone involved in combustion equipment selection, sizing, and emissions control.
