Interfacial Phenomena and Colloid Stability

Interfacial Phenomena and Colloid Stability PDF Author: Tharwat F. Tadros
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110366479
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 418

Book Description
The main objective of this volume is to demonstrate the importance of the fundamental aspects of interfacial phenomena in various industrial applications. The text provides the reader with the knowledge that is essential for the composition of the complex multi-phase systems used in the above mentioned areas of application. It should enable the physical and formulation chemist as well as the chemical engineer in designing the formulation on the basis of a rational approach. It will also enable the formulation scientist to better understanding the factors responsible for producing a stable product with optimum application conditions. The book should also be very useful for teaching the subject of formulation at academic institutions.

Clay Swelling and Colloid Stability

Clay Swelling and Colloid Stability PDF Author: Martin V. Smalley
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780849380792
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 284

Book Description
In a rare, over-the-shoulder perspective of a leading scientist’s own breakthroughs, Clay Swelling and Colloid Stability puts emphasis on two significant paradigm shifts in colloid science that explain particle interactions for charged plates, stacks, suspensions, and pastes as well as spherical colloids. Martin Smalley first discusses the replacement of the DLVO theory with the Coulombic Attraction Theory to explain the existence, extent, and properties of the two-phase region of colloid stability. Using the n-butylammonium vermiculite system as his model clay system, the author clarifies the flaws of conventional theories and presents the experimental details that form the basis of his new theories. He provides rigorous derivations that place the new electrical theory for charged colloids on a firm foundation in statistical mechanics. The author illustrates why a new, quantitative bridging flocculation model for polymer-stabilized colloids must replace the depletion flocculation model. Smalley also examines the discovery of the "dressed macroion" structure of clay plates in solution, the structure of a bridging polymer, and the distribution of polymer segments, counterions, and water molecules in the interlayer region. Based on the author’s own research and 36 publications in the field, Clay Swelling and Colloid Stability isa self-contained and intellectually satisfying account of the revolutionary process leading to a universally sound, and increasingly applicable, theory of colloid stability.

Polymer-Mediated Phase Stability of Colloids

Polymer-Mediated Phase Stability of Colloids PDF Author: Álvaro González García
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030336832
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 151

Book Description
Colloid–polymer mixtures are subject of intensive research due to their wide range of applicability, for instance in coatings and food-stuffs. This thesis constitutes a fundamental investigation towards a better control over the stability of such suspensions. Through the chapters, different key parameters governing the stability of colloid–polymer mixtures are explored. How the colloid (pigment) shape and the effective polymer-colloid affinity modulate the stability of the suspension are examples of these key parameters. Despise the mostly theoretical results presented, the thesis is written in a format accessible to a broad scientific audience. Some of the equations of state presented might of direct use to experimentalists. Furthermore, new theoretical insights about colloid–polymer mixtures are put forward. These include four-phase coexistences in effective two-component, quantification of depletant partitioning at high colloidal concentrations, multiple re-entrant phase behaviour of the colloidal fluid–solid coexistence, and a condition where polymers are neither depleted nor adsorbed from/to the colloidal surface.
