The Unanimous Champions of College Football, 1869-2019 PDF Author: Robert J. Reid
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476683557
Category : Sports & Recreation

Pages : 337

Book Description
In the 150 years of college football history, the national championship has been decided by unanimous vote only 33 times. This book analyzes the various methods of selecting these champions and what made the teams special. Drawing on archives and early published works, a firsthand description of the 1869 inaugural game between Princeton and Rutgers is provided, along with details of how these earliest teams were managed. The contributions and innovations of Walter Camp, the "Father of Football," are explored, as is the evolution of the game itself. Each unanimous season since the turn of the 20th century--from Yale in 1900 to LSU in 2019--is covered in detail, with a brief history of each school's football program. The question "is there a best ever team" is explored.

Who's #1? PDF Author: Christopher J. Walsh
Publisher: Taylor Trade Publishing
ISBN: 1461734762
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 336

Book Description
There’s nothing quite as controversial in American sports as college football’s national championship, making it common fodder for talk around the water cooler as well as loftier debates among professional journalists in the sports pages. Walsh takes a comprehensive view of over a century of controversy, breaking teams down into one of three categories: perennial powers, contenders, and former greats. He then reviews the ten most controversial championships, suggests candidates for the best overall football program, and concludes with some thoughts on the future of the BCS. A comprehensive appendix lists national champions since 1869; AP and USA Today/UPI final polls; final BCS standings; first-team All-Americans; and College Football Hall of Fame inductees.

Book Description
In this book, we explore the history of college football, and in particular the mythical college championship, from 1869 to the present day. For several years, different media outlets took it upon themselves to declare a national championship, which led to nothing short of confusion. In one year, four different teams were named champion! This chaotic situation and accompanying controversy ultimately led to the creation of the Bowl Championship Series, or BCS. Initially, the BCS selection was based on a formula that incorporated several polls and computer models. However, the proprietary nature of the computer models and the complexity of the mathematics used to combine the data sources to arrive at the final selection did very little to quiet the controversy. This led to the creation of a selection committee to choose the four "best" teams to compete in a four-team playoff. Again, controversy has ensued, with many questioning the politics and nebulous, capricious nature of the criteria. We have created an alternate model, which we have dubbed the weighted wins system, that defines a simple, unbiased, and consistent mechanism for evaluating and comparing the records of the teams in the NCAA's Bowl Subdivision. We have compared the results of the weighted wins model against forty years of actual game results and found that it generates very similar outcomes. The primary difference is that it completely removes politics from the selection process and offers a clear path to the playoffs for all members of the Bowl Subdivision.
