Book Description
How do university finances really work? From flagship public research universities to small, private liberal arts colleges, there are few aspects of these institutions associated with more confusion, myths or lack of understanding than how they fund themselves and function in the business of higher education. Using simple, approachable explanations supported by clear illustrations, this book takes the reader on an engaging and enlightening tour of how the money flows. How does the university really pay for itself? Why do tuition and fees rise so fast? Why do universities lose money on research? Do most donations go to athletics? Grounded in hard data, original analyses, and the practical experience of a seasoned administrator, this book provides refreshingly clear answers and comprehensive insights for anyone on or off campus who is interested in the business of the university: how it earns its money, how it spends it, and how it all works.

Book Description
Much of what is written about colleges and universities ties rapidly rising tuition to dysfunctional behavior in the academy. Common targets of dysfunction include prestige games among universities, gold plated amenities, and bloated administration. This book offers a different view. To explain rising college cost, the authors place the higher education industry firmly within the larger economic history of the United States. The trajectory of college cost is similar to cost behavior in many other industries, and this is no coincidence. Higher education is a personal service that relies on highly educated labor. A technological trio of broad economic forces has come together in the last thirty years to cause higher education costs, and costs in many other industries, to rise much more rapidly than the inflation rate. The main culprit is economic growth itself. This finding does not mean that all is well in American higher education. A college education has become less reachable to a broad swathe of the American public at the same time that the market demand for highly educated people has soared. This affordability problem has deep roots. The authors explore how cost pressure, the changing wage structure of the US economy, and the complexity of financial aid policy combine to reduce access to higher education below what we need in the 21st century labor market. This book is a call to calm the rhetoric of blame and to instead find policies that will increase access to higher education while preserving the quality of our colleges and universities.

Readers will gain insight into the background and foundation of community college finance and learn the essentials of practice in today's economic and political climate. The discussion covers student financial aid, tuition, budgeting, and more, and explores the future of federal policy and what it means for the institutions that play such a critical role in the nation's educational system. This book fills that need with expert insight reflecting current realities and a true understanding of the challenges community colleges face. Readers will: Delve into factors affecting funding and the cost of attendance Develop a budgeting style and process that serves the institution Learn to manage fiscal crises effectively without reducing standards Consider the future of federal policy and how it will affect budgeting At a time when a difficult economy raises questions about the value of higher education, the value that community colleges offer becomes ever more clear. Community College Finance provides the guidance leaders need to help their institutions flourish.

Book Description
"It is by far the best study that I know of on community colleges. It comes at a critical time in the history of these institutions. It is carefully reasoned, beautifully written, and sound in its conclusions."—Howard R. Bowen; Professor of Economics and Education, Claremont Graduate School "...and excellent piece of work....Its quality is high and the book is significant. Its significance stems from the fact that it deals with an area of higher education not yet explored by other writings."—Earl F. Cheit; Dean, Schools of Business Administration; University of California, Berkeley "...a great job of describing and clarifying the issues....The book should become 'required reading' for our field...a very fine piece of work that will be a valuable tool for educators, students, and policy-makers."—Roger Yarrington; Vice President, Research and Development, American Association of Community and Junior Colleges "...a thorough job of compiling the pertinent data; of identifying key questions; and of focusing upon central, rather than tangential, issues....Leaders and policy-makers in community colleges and in governmental positions will undoubtedly find the work an invaluable resource."—Bill J. Book Description
This book addresses the uncertain state of financial literacy among today’s college students and examines steps colleges and universities are taking to address this widespread concern. This work introduces a four-fold typology of organizational models for college-based financial education programs and uses these as optics for grouping and presenting case studies. The case studies presented provide a holistic representation of how universities develop, sustain and grow financial education programs. Details on the nature of programs, goals, administrative support, resources, partnerships, scale of operations, program content and delivery, advertising, evaluation, program spinoffs, and much more are captured in this work. In addition to detailed case studies, this book presents general findings on the availability of and delivery modes for college-based financial education. This work has significant utility for universities and colleges seeking to implement new financial education programs, changing existing programs, improving program relevancy or expanding program delivery on campus. It is an important contribution to the experiential understanding on how college students as consumers can acquire financial education as part of their broader college curricula and be able to better manage their financial lives. Included in the coverage: The financial literacy imperative. Program delivery and organizational models in state colle ges and universities. The academic model. The full-fledged money management center. The aspirational/seed program. The branch/interspersed model. As financial literacy is increasingly recognized as a core life skill, it becomes more crucial as a component of higher education. Personal Financial Education in State Colleges and Universities in the U.S. is salient reading for college and university administrators, researchers, social workers and mental health professionals working with college students, policy analysts and faculty from any discipline interested in promoting the financial literacy of their students.

Book Description
Excerpt from College and University Finance The general purpose in writing this book has been to lighten the tasks of college administrators and to help make their work more satisfactory, both to themselves and to all those who have at heart the welfare of American colleges. The particular purpose in writing it, in response to numer ous requests, has been to put into book form a statement of the principles underlying college accounting and the use and care of trust funds, and to describe a complete, yet simple, system of college accounts which has been tried and found satisfactory. It is hoped that business officers will find the book a help to them in performing their duties more intelligently and efficiently, and that presidents, as well as trustees, will be assisted in discharging their responsibilities. No attempt has been made to discuss educational problems, the text being limited to a discussion of business and financial problems only.
