Many samples of these viruses are only slightly virulent even for rats, and the dose of virus which those who handle it are likely to ingest is probably small, particularly if the usual instructions are followed. Moreover, occasional individual instances of infection might easily escape notice and fail to be recorded. These reasons help to explain why Bacillus enteritidis has so seldom caused disease, in spite of its extensive employment as a virus.12 Bainbridge: Paratyphoid Fever and Food-poisoning There can be little doubt, from the evidence just detailed, that Bacillus enteritidis can cause food-poisoning. Further information is needed, however, concerning its distribution in the lower animals and the possible existence of animal carriers.
