Black Night for Bomber Command

Black Night for Bomber Command PDF Author: Richard Knott
Publisher: Pen and Sword
ISBN: 1781594422
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 435

Book Description
"I am not pressing you to fight the weather as well as the Germans, never forget that." So wrote Winston Churchill to Arthur Harris, the Commander-in-Chief of RAF Bomber Command, after the terrible events of 16 December 1943. In the murky dusk almost five hundred heavy bombers, almost entirely Lancasters, set out for Berlin from their bases in eastern England, from north Yorkshire to southern Cambridgeshire. They lifted off at around 4 pm to bomb the target four hours later and were expected to return at midnight. 328 aircrew lost their lives that night they were the victims of the weather, not the Germans. This book relates the tragic circumstances of individual crews as they struggled to find their home bases in low cloud and fog. It also includes stories from the local people who remember hearing a low-flying aircraft and all too often the frightful explosion as it struck unexpected high ground or even trees. Some rescue attempts were successful, but for most aircrew it was death in a blazing wreck. Many of the crash sites have been explored by the author as he tried to imagine exactly how each aircraft came to grief. It contains many photos of aircraft as they were and the remaining impact areas that remain to this day.

Category : Cooking
Languages : en
Pages : 169

Book Description
Food and history combine in this exploration of the Dutch influence on American holiday traditions. Includes more than one hundred easy-to-make holiday recipes. Delicious December mixes food and history in a celebration of Dutch and American Christmas traditions. In more than one hundred tried-and-true recipes, award-winning food historian Peter G. Rose draws on traditions that date back to the Middle Ages, as well as her own reminiscences of her native country, and suggests many ways to incorporate these true Dutch treats into American celebrations. The book not only talks about the history and recipes of St. Nicholas Day celebrations, but also about Dutch specialties for Christmas and New Year’s. Rose includes recipes for savory cookies and party treats as well as menus and recipes for the parties that might happen between the feast days. Divided into two parts, part one discusses the history of St. Nicholas, how he was brought to America and became Santa, and the other changes that have taken place here as well as in the Netherlands. The second part consists of 111 recipes that are easy to make and easy to love. Delicious December is for anyone interested in food and history, and those of Dutch descent will find many old favorites here, together with new, fresh ideas based on long traditions. ADVANCE PRAISE FOR DELICIOUS DECEMBER “Peter Rose is a national treasure, a rare writer who understands history and a very specific place, and in this book she uses that knowledge to leave me wanting nothing more than Christmas (or a holiday if you prefer, or a long, snowy afternoon) in the Hudson River Valley and beyond. This is a wonderful book!” — Molly O’Neill, author of One Big Table: A Portrait of American Cooking: 600 Recipes from the Nation’s Best Home Cooks, Farmers, Fishermen, Pit-masters, and Chefs “What a treat! Not only does Peter Rose provide us with an enjoyable history of Santa Claus but also with seasonal recipes of treats to enjoy while reading. Now, when asked about St. Nicholas, Sinter Claes, or Santa Claus I can safely refer people to a reliable source.” — Charles T. Gehring, Director, New Netherland Research Center “Delicious December is really two great books in one, revealing the little-known Dutch origins of American Christmas traditions, while also bringing into American kitchens dozens of lovely, festive Dutch recipes that few American cooks have ever heard of. Like a wonderful Christmas present, this book gives us historical insights we have long wished for—as well as delicious surprises we did not even know to ask for.” — Stephen Schmidt, food historian and author of Master Recipes: A New Approach to the Fundamentals of Good Cooking “Peter Rose knows more about Dutch life and lore than anyone I’ve ever come across, and she’s done it again! This exuberant excursion into the world of Christmas reveals the Dutch roots of many of our holiday traditions and, best of all, provides us heaps of richly tempting recipes to make everyone’s favorite season even more memorable.” — Nach Waxman, owner, Kitchen Arts & Letters, Inc. “A must-read for those interested in the origin of Santa and lovers of feel-good holiday season food.” — Rob de Vos, Consul-General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to New York

Eavesdropping on Texas History

Eavesdropping on Texas History PDF Author: Mary L. Scheer
Publisher: University of North Texas Press
ISBN: 1574416758
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 352

Book Description
Most writers and readers of history have at one time or another wished that they could have been at some particular defining event in history. Whether it was a moment of a great decision, a major turning point that changed everything, or simply an intriguing occurrence, many scholars and others have on occasion wished that they “could have been there.” Texas history provides infinite Lone Star episodes to consider, rooted in the widespread assumption that Texas is a colorful, unique, and exceptional place with larger-than-life heroes and narratives. Mary L. Scheer has assembled fifteen contributors to explore special moments in Texas history. The contributors assembled for this anthology represent many of the “all stars” among Texas historians: two State Historians of Texas, two past presidents of TSHA, four current or past presidents of ETHA, two past presidents of WTHA, nine fellows of historical associations, two Fulbright Scholars, and seven award-winning authors. Each is an expert in his or her field and provided in some fashion an answer to the question: At what moment in Texas history would you have liked to have been a “fly on the wall” and why? The choice of an event and the answers were both personal and individual, ranging from familiar topics to less well-known subjects. One wanted to be at the Alamo. Another chose to explore when Sam Houston refused to take a loyalty oath to the Confederacy. One chapter follows the first twenty-four hours of Lyndon Baines Johnson’s presidency after Kennedy’s assassination. Others write about the Dust Bowl coming to Texas, or when Texas Southern University was created. Their respective essays are not written as isolated occurrences or “moments,” but as causal developments presented within the larger social and political context of the period.

Category : Fiction

Pages : 208

Book Description
The Smile of December By: Jonathan Vickers THE SMILE OF DECEMBER is a family drama with an overall theme of fatherhood in its various forms. For Darryl Walker, being a good father to two handsome boys would be his finest achievement, nullifying the mistakes of his own father, but fate can intervene in strange ways. The joys and sadness of fatherhood are tested time and again – sometimes elevated, sometimes crushed – for Darryl and his two sons, brothers who are as different as God could possibly create them and who lead unusual and surprising lives as adults. Darryl raises his sons while enduring a loveless marriage to a woman he was emotionally blackmailed into marrying; always remembering the beautiful woman he does love but will never be able to love completely. The lives of these five people are sent on an unforeseen trajectory by the cruel and vicious act of a rapist – a rape that alters and re-defines who they are: Does creating a life give a man ownership to it? Is a man bound to be faithful to a woman he does not love? Can the friendship between two men transcend a sexual act?
