This text deals fundamentally with design and architecture: the route of spatial recognition, which is the least known —or worked on— within the approaches of the autism spectrum given its difficulty in being synthesized in a paradigm or normative set. The objective is to create a framework to approach the design of environments and buildings, in order to facilitate spatial development in everyday life and, especially, in learning situations. The spatial route, which is the project, creates: - A set of spatial coordinates that liberates the user from the anguish of not recognizing, of not understanding the space in which he is developing. And that offer him the possibility of finding the way, directing him to where he needs or wants to go. - Structure of the exterior and interior, with their corresponding activities placed in a comprenssible way through concepts of organization: functional and sensorial sequence of events. And creation of spaces for group and individual tasks, paying special attention to places of transition and recovery between opposite or different activities, both physical and emotional. - The aspects that are developed in terms of recommendations are synthesized in a construct that brings together the aspects of general, functional, formal and sensory organization of plans, elevations and details. Achieving with these “person-space” adjustments a higher quality of personal life and of its affective and learning environment. - Design components that in the case of autism should be considered in order to seek with the project greater facility of understanding, use and space-emotional development of people from childhood to adult life.

Creating a connection between a person and space by designing a space around the minds of its inhabitants is one of the most powerful things architecture can do. There is great potential to address the human mind and body through design, and for experiential design to calm the senses before sensory malfunction occurs in a person with autism. This thesis responds to the need for more human-centric architecture by proposing a set of residential design guidelines for individuals with autism spectrum disorder and implementing the set of guidelines into a group home for people on the autism spectrum via historic renovation of a house in Burlingame, Oregon. The research conducted for this thesis will use both qualitative and quantitative methods for gathering information regarding how to best address autism hypersensitivies in a residential setting. Literature on how architecture can integrate psychology and neuroscience will be an additional resource for this proposal. Special education schools, programs, teachers, and researchers that are knowledgeable in the area of the specialized form of sensory stimulation that autism necessitates will be used as references in building this proposal. International interest in the use of assistive and ambient information and communication technologies to support people with a range of cognitive impairments is growing rapidly. Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), which affect social skills, communicative abilities and behavior, are of particular interest. The number of diagnosed cases has continued to grow in recent decades, and the impairments associated with ASDs mean individuals affected are at risk of social isolation and marginalization. Although helping people with autism to overcome their difficulties has always required the joint expertise of various fields, the widely shared view is that innovative ICT may hold the key to more efficient support and intervention in the near future. This book summarizes the results and conclusions of HANDS, an international research and development project supported by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission. The aim of the HANDS project was to develop and test a smartphone-based cognitive support system for intellectually able young people with ASDs, with a focus on use in secondary school environments. The results presented here include the HANDS system: a partly mobile, partly web-based cognitive support system based on principles of Persuasive Design; a unique multi-mode research methodology, applying both various quantitative and qualitative techniques to test the applicability and efficiency of the system; an exploration of relevant conceptual issues from the point of view of Persuasive Design and its philosophical foundations; a mapping of key ethical issues related to developing and applying mobile ICT for individuals with autism and other cognitive impairments. The experiences of teachers who implemented the system in school environments are also summarized. These results can be seen as snapshots of an evolutionary process, but the conclusions drawn here are significant for future developments with mobile assistive technology for people with ASD, as well as for other conditions. The book will be of interest to professionals working with young people with ASD, human-computer interaction professionals, as well as others working in the broader field of mobile assistive technology.
