Book Description
This book examines the struggle for Protestant consensus through the work of John a Lasco (1499-1560), particularly his book Forma ac ratio. Published in 1555, it records the rites and practices of the London Strangers' Church and was intended to provide a model for uniting the disparate Protestant communities on the continent. By putting Lasco's unique model for Protestant churches into the wider European context and assessing his impact on the struggle for unity, this book helps to re-establish Lasco as a pivotal figure of the reformation.

The Colloquy of Montbéliard

The Colloquy of Montbéliard PDF Author: Jill Raitt
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0195360516
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 241

Book Description
Focusing on the Colloquy of Montbéliard, a theological debate in 1586 between Lutherans and Calvinists, Raitt explores the complex array of shifting political alliances and religious tensions which characterized the Holy Roman Empire after the Peace of Augsburg. When the Wars of Religion broke out in France, both sides courted allies. Often these alliances involved confessional tests--most often concerning the Eucharist. Modern readers might expect that such complex theological questions belong in seminaries, but in many cases, they took place at the request of people and princes. On the outcome of these debates depended the well-being of towns and villages as well as the disposition of troops and the conduct of wars. Raitt's study of the "age of confessionalism" uncovers the background and details of the Colloquy of Monteb((e'))liard and analyzes the nature and implications of the underlying theological conflict.

The Bull in Coena Domini

The Bull in Coena Domini PDF Author: Catholic Church
Publisher: CreateSpace
ISBN: 9781516977499
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 28

Book Description
The document popularly designated as the Bull Coena, or the Bull In Coena Domini, derives its name from the practice, which is of great antiquity in the Roman Church, of publishing annually, on Maundy Thursday, the anniversary of the institution of the Lord's Supper, thence called Dies Coena Domini, certain sentences of excommunication against the enemies of the Roman See and the Roman Church. The document containing these sentences being in the form of a Papal Bull or Letter Apostolic, is accordingly called the Bull Coena or In Coena. For the last two centuries and a half it has undergone no change, being republished from time to time by successive Popes without alteration or addition, and adopted into the body of the Roman Canon Law, some of the most important principles of which are contained in it. According to the usual manner of citing Papal Bulls by the initial words, the Bull in its present shape is called the Bull "Pastoralis Romani Pontificis" but there were other Bulls before it, which, on the same ground as this, viz., their publication on Maundy Thursday, were, in their time, the Bulls Coena, or In Coena. In fact the Bull Pastoralia is the latest edition of a series of Bulls issued at different times, and by different Pontiffs, for the excommunication of heretics, for the assertion and maintenance of the Ecclesiastical supremacy of the Roman Pontiff, and for other collateral purposes. The different excommunications which are now thrown together into one Bull, were originally scattered through a variety of Bulls, and by degrees incorporated with the Bull published annually on Maundy Thursday.
