Book Description
In January 1960, a 12,400 curie cobalt-60 facility was installed at the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine. It was primarily designed to provide uniform fields at high dose rates for the whole-body exposure of large animals, such as primates, and other objects of comparable size. The cobalt-60 sources were arrayed about a horseshoe-shaped holder in such a manner that the holder could be treated mathematically upon calibration as a point source. The calibration was accomplished with both passive and active dosimetry systems and included comparison with other cobalt-60 facilities. Given are the physical dimensions and arrangement of the facility, the exposure geometry, the equations utilized to determine the dose rate, the compensations necessary for source decay, and the isodose limits. (Author).
