Villages, Women, and the Success of Dairy Cooperatives in India

Book Description
India's cooperative dairying program is widely celebrated as an example of successful rural development, yet the meanings of this success have been understood mainly through the pronouncements of national and international development agencies. Within such official narratives, there has been relatively little engagement with the geographies of dairy development, both its place-specific productions through political contests, availabilities of labor, and distributions of agricultural resources, and the unevenness of its outcomes across rural India. This absence is even more surprising given that village-level cooperatives comprise the foundation of India's dairy development program, and the work of women within rural households is continuously invoked as an integral part of the dairy work. This book extends and enriches current understandings of cooperative dairying in India to show both its value to rural communities as well as the limitations of its participatory structures. Combining comparative and ethnographic approaches, explanations for the diverse outcomes of cooperative dairying are provided from the perspective of the people and places directly involved in the everyday reproductions of rural development. This book contributes to existing understandings of rural development and rural geographies in four significant ways. First, by following histories of development from their local origins to their national and international appearances, the global genealogies that are usually attached to development are rendered more complex. Second, by connecting cooperatives to place, the ways in which participation in development reflects local struggles for power and, hence, are structured through local inequalities, is revealed. Third, by linking dairying and agriculture, the continuing importance of resource distributions in shaping the outcomes of rural development is highlighted. Finally, the crucial role of household divisions of labor in the success of village dairy cooperatives is explicated through showing how struggles over the meanings of rural women's work become key to enabling household-level participation in dairying. This book will be of interest to scholars in a wide range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary fields, including geography, sociology, anthropology, rural studies, development studies, gender studies, and regional studies of India.

Co-operatives and Rural Development in India

Book Description
Ever since India's attainment of independence in 1947, alleviation of rural poverty has been one of the primary objectives of the country's planned economic development. The government of India has been striving to improve the economic and social conditions of rural populations through a host of measures, including the creation of productive employment opportunities based on optimal use of local raw materials and skills. It is undertaking interventions aimed at: (a) improving the supply chain, (b) enhancing skills, (c) upgrading technology, and (d) expanding markets and capacity building of the entrepreneurs/artisans and their groups/collectives. Having begun primarily in the field of credit as a defensive mechanism against the usurious money lenders, co-operatives have come to embrace a large gamut of activities to serve the interests of the producers and consumers. Credit, however, still continues to be the predominant activity. Co-operatives are expected to play a major role in the distribution of inputs and services to the farmers on the one hand and in assisting marketing and processing of agricultural produce on the other. This book contains research papers which provide deep insights into the complexities involved in rural development of India and the role which co-operatives can play in this stupendous task.

Book Description
The Lesson Of Agrarian History From Rome To Scotland Is That The Essential Ingredient Of Agriculture Is Credit Generation And That The Agriculturists Must Borrow Heavily From Others. The Peasantry Of India Is No Exception. Farm Credit In India Is Characterised By Dualism, I.E., Institutional As Well As Non-Institutional. Among The Institutional Agencies Providing Credit To Agriculturists, Co-Operatives Play A Major Role.Andhra Pradesh Is One Of The Important States, Which Has Attained Reasonable Progress In Different Spheres Of Co-Operative Movement. After The Introduction Of The Single Window System In Andhra Pradesh, 22 District Co-Operative Central Banks (Dccbs) Came Into Existence In The Place Of The 27 Co-Operative Central Banks Which Hitherto Existed. As Intermediaries, The Dccbs Have A Pivotal Role In The Co-Operative Credit System. They Form The Connecting Link Between The State Co-Operative Bank And The Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (Pacs). The Progress Of Co-Operative Credit Programmes Largely Depends On The Financial Strength And Viability Of These Banks. But A Good Majority Of Dccbs Are In Financial Distress In View Of Operational Inefficiency. Overdues Have Become The Bane Of Co-Operative Credit. The Long Cherished Dream Of Liberating The Poverty-Stricken Rural Masses From The Clutches Of Exploitative Money-Lenders Has Remained Unfulfilled. Further, Co-Operatives, As Tools Of Rural Development, Have More Or Less, Failed To Accomplish The Objectives For Which They Were Established.
