Book Description
Set against the divergent landscape of British Columbia — from the splendours of nature to its immense dangers, from urban grease and grit to dry, desert towns — Clear Skies, No Wind, 100% Visibility examines human beings and their many frailties with breathtaking insight and accuracy. Théodora Armstrong peoples her stories with characters as richly various — and as compelling — as her settings. A soon-to-be father and haute cuisine chef mercilessly berates his staff while facing his lack of preparedness for parenthood. A young girl revels in the dark drama of the murder of a girl from her neighbourhood. A novice air-traffic specialist must come to terms with his first loss — the death of a pilot — on his watch. And the dangers of deep canyons and powerful currents spur on the reckless behaviour of teenagers as they test the limits of bravery, friendship, and sex. With startling intimacy and language stripped bare, Clear Skies, No Wind, 100% Visibility announces the arrival of Théodora Armstrong as a striking new literary voice.

In Shackleton's Footsteps
Author: Henry Worsley
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 076277567X
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 273
Book Description
On October 29, 1908, a party of four men, led by Ernest Shackleton, set out to be the first to reach the South Pole. Three months later, their mission was in ruins and they faced certain death if they carried on. Just ninety-seven miles from the South Pole, Shackleton turned back. One hundred years later, in October 2008, a team that included descendants of that original party, led by Henry Worsley, set out from Shackleton’s hut to celebrate the centenary of his expedition by retracing the exact 870-mile route and going on to finish the last ninety-seven miles. This captivating book explores the history of the original expedition and reasons behind its failure, while capturing the meticulous planning, fundraising, and training for the new expedition. It includes riveting accounts of the team’s first days on the ice, Christmas on the polar plateau, the brutal reality of crossing the Beardmore Glacier, and the final miles to the South Pole. In Shackleton's Footsteps is a unique story of adventure, pioneering spirit, settling old family business, and man’s triumph over nature.

Improving Visibility During Periods of Supercooled Fog
Author: James R. Hicks
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Fog
Languages : en
Pages : 48
Book Description
Six tests of dispersal systems using propane were conducted in Hanover, New Hampshire during winter 1964-65 and a like number in Greenland during summer 1965 mainly on supercooled fogs and in a few instances when air temperatures were within the lower 2 meters at or slightly above freezing. Propane was introduced into the fog as a liquid aerosol to induce spontaneous nucleation either by cooling or by clathrate reaction which may be important in fog modification. The tests show that liquid propane will improve visibility in fogs, is safe to use, and no standby time is needed. The system may be permanently installed with either radio or manually controlled valve units, and is inexpensive, a cost of $20/hr estimated to keep an airport approach zone clear of fog. Details of the individual tests conducted are given. The dispensing apparatus, propane flammability tests, and the theory of formation, growth, and precipitation of ice crystals, thermal reaction, and the clathrate concept are discussed. (Author).
