Clause Combination in Chinese

Clause Combination in Chinese PDF Author: Halvor Eifring
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004482733
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 451

Book Description
Clause Combination in Chinese is an abundantly documented study of composite sentences in Modern Chinese, their semantic properties and syntactic behaviour. It discusses the extent of language variation, the relation between synchrony and diachrony, the nature of grammaticalization, generality and gradience, and the non-uniqueness of syntactic analysis. The first part provides a new categorization of clause combinations and clause connectives. It introduces a class of connectives often combining units larger than the sentence. It also discusses the frequent non-use of clause connectives in Chinese composite sentences. The second part contains case studies of composite sentences with unusual semantic properties, among them a hitherto unrecognized pattern with no English counterpart: adverbial clauses expressing necessity. The book should be of interest to all students of Chinese linguistics and to general linguists concerned with sentence complexity.

Grounding in Chinese Written Narrative Discourse

Grounding in Chinese Written Narrative Discourse PDF Author: Wendan Li
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004360883
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 293

Book Description
In Grounding in Chinese Written Narrative Discourse Wendan Li offers a comprehensive and innovative account of how Mandarin Chinese, as a language without extensive morphological marking, highlights (or foregrounds) major events of a narrative and demotes (or backgrounds) other supporting descriptions. Qualitative and quantitative methods in the analysis and examinations of authentic written text provide extensive evidence to demonstrate that various types of morpho-syntactic devices are used in a wide range of structural units in Chinese to mark the distinction between foregrounding and backgrounding. The analysis paves the way for future studies to systematically approach grounding-related issues. The typological viewpoint adopted in the chapters serves well readers from both the Chinese tradition and other languages in discourse analysis.

Chinese Rhetoric and Writing

Chinese Rhetoric and Writing PDF Author: Andy Kirkpatrick
Publisher: Parlor Press LLC
ISBN: 1602353034
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 217

Book Description
Andy Kirkpatrick and and Zhichang Xu offer a response to the argument that Chinese students’ academic writing in English is influenced by “culturally nuanced rhetorical baggage that is uniquely Chinese and hard to eradicate.” Noting that this argument draws from “an essentially monolingual and Anglo-centric view of writing,” they point out that the rapid growth in the use of English worldwide calls for “a radical reassessment of what English is in today’s world.” The result is a book that provides teachers of writing, and in particular those involved in the teaching of English academic writing to Chinese students, an introduction to key stages in the development of Chinese rhetoric, a wide-ranging field with a history of several thousand years. Understanding this important rhetorical tradition provides a strong foundation for assessing and responding to the writing of this growing group of students.

The Emporium of the World

The Emporium of the World PDF Author: Angela Schottenhammer
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9789004117730
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 500

Book Description
This volume, by offering a score of new insights derived from a wide variety of recent archaeological and textual sources, bring to life an important overseas trading port in Southeast Asia: Quanzhou. During the Song and Yuan dynasties active official and unofficial engagement in trade had formative effects on the development of the maritime trade of Quanzhou and its social and economic position both regionally and supraregionally. In the first part subjects such as the impact of the Song imperial clan and the local elites on these developments, the economic importance of metals, coins, paper money, and changes in the political economy, are amply discussed. The second part concentrates on the quantitative and qualitative analysis of archaeological data and materials, the investigation of commodities from China, their origins, distribution and final destinations, the use of foreign labour, and the particular role of South Thailand in trade connections, thus supplying the hard data underlying the main argument of the book.

Writing against The State

Writing against The State PDF Author: Dominik Declercq
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004420401
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 444

Book Description
This book is about the tension between de facto political power and the claims to intellectual and moral leadership of the shi (‘gentleman class’) in Early Medieval China. Shelun, or Hypothetical Discourse, is a hitherto neglected Chinese literary genre. The author for the first time places the surviving texts against the political background that accounts for its rise and decline in early medieval China. Comprehensively annotated translations of seven Hypothetical Discourses are placed in the context of their authors' lives and times, with an emphasis on the post-Han examples of the genre. This thorough study gives insight into this subgenre of fu by which the world of the Chinese gentleman class finds an always ambiguous expression in the rhyme-prose texts under review.

Clause Combining in Grammar and Discourse

Clause Combining in Grammar and Discourse PDF Author: John Haiman
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027228930
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 457

Book Description
Traditionally the study of syntax is restricted to the study of what goes on within the boundaries of the prosodic sentence. Although the nature of clause combining within a prosodic sentence has always been a central concern of traditional syntax (in GG, e.g. it underlies important research on deletion and anaphora), work within a discourse analysis framework has hardly been done. Analyses like this are given in the present volume.

The Acquisition of English Grammar and Phonology by Cantonese ESL Learners

The Acquisition of English Grammar and Phonology by Cantonese ESL Learners PDF Author: Alice Yin Wa Chan
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000818373
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 230

Book Description
Chan’s exploration of the acquisition of English grammar and phonology by Cantonese learners of English as a Second Language (ESL) offers insights into the specific challenges that learners often encounter and posits ways to help them overcome those challenges. Possible sources of the challenges are also examined. The book covers the basic differences between English and Cantonese grammar as well as those between English and Cantonese phonology. Chan discusses the kinds of grammatical and phonological problems that Cantonese ESL learners often have in their acquisition of English. In terms of grammar, various structures are reviewed, including errors which are clearly due to L1 interference and also those which may not be directly L1-related. Learners’ common misconceptions about relevant concepts are also revealed. In terms of phonology, both speech perception and speech production problems at the segmental and suprasegmental levels are examined. For learner problems which may be the result of L1 interference, a contrastive approach is adopted in analysing the cause and nature of the errors. Chan also offers readers pedagogical insights to target common grammatical problems, including the use of an algorithmic approach, the use of a discovery-based consciousness-raising approach and the use of metalinguistic explanations. As far as the learning of English phonology is concerned, she argues that the training of speech production should go hand-in-hand with that of speech perception. Future research can experiment with the proposed teaching ideas with Cantonese ESL learners and learners of other native languages. Researchers and ESL teaching professionals will find the insights and research contained within this volume invaluable when encountering or researching Chinese ESL learners.
