Book Description
Excerpt from Evolution of the Air-Brake: A Brief but Comprehensive History of the Development of the Modern Railroad Brake, From the Earliest Conception Contained in the Simple Lever, Up to and Including, the Most Approved Forms of the Present Day Upwards of two years ago the author of this book began the publication, in the "Railway Engineering and Mechanics," of a series of articles treating of the history of the railroad brake. Favorable comment from many readers has encouraged him to believe that the subject is of sufficient interest to warrant the preservation of the matter contained in the articles referred to in a more permanent form. It has therefore been revised and corrected; and, together with some additional material, brought together to form the basis of this work. To the author himself, the labor involved in collecting and arranging the data contained in these pages, has proven of great benefit in aiding him to secure a clear and comprehensive knowledge of the art of which he treats; and it is his sincere hope, that, to the reader as well, this record of the past will prove of practical value. Book Description
Excerpt from The Air-Brake: A Practical Presentation of the Modern Developments of the Air-Brake for Steam and Electric Railroad Trains The development. Of the many accessory appliances with which the rolling stock of our railways is fitted, has been the subject of a great deal of study and investigation. Of the many appliances which have received careful and systematic study, the braking apparatus may be mentioned as one of the most important. The time when the question of braking first received attention dates back further than the time when highways became sufficiently well made and well maintained to permit of vehicles being drawn at a moderate rate of speed. When wheeled vehicles, drawn at speeds of 10 or 15 miles per hour, first made their appearance, it was found necessary to provide means by which they could be easily and quickly stopped in case of an emergency. The first carts and wagons, built for agricultural purposes, were of such construction that the resist ance of the earth and axle were sufficient to bring them to rest in a reasonable length of time on ordinary roads. In cases of steep grades, the motion was retarded by one or both wheels being locked with chains, or by a stone or piece of timber being chained to the axle and dragged along the ground behind the vehicle. It 13 interesting to note that the question of braking has steadily increased in importance as the demand for higher speed has increased. This applies equally well to all classes of vehicles, including railway trains, street and. Interurban cars, automobiles, and wagons. The first forms of braking apparatus adopted have formed the basis of almost all brake appliances which have since been employed for the same class of vehicles. Book Description
Excerpt from Air Brake Instruction Book of the Westinghouse Air Brake Company The present edition of our Instruction Book is in the nature of a revision of our previous publications. It has been our aim to condense and simplify the descriptive matter as much as possible, and at the same time to present a complete description of the parts and their operation in the air-brake and air-signal equipment. In it will be found illustrations and explanations of the new devices, as well as of any modifications of older appliances which have been made with the idea of furnishing the best possible air brake and air-signal equipment. We have distributed many thousand copies of previous editions of our Instruction Book among railway officers and employees in this and other countries, the net result of which has been the education of railroad men in the subject of air brakes, to such an extent that we are led to believe that much of the matter heretofore published can be consistently omitted, especially as there are now many other publications which deal with brake subjects at greater length and provide a source of information in de tail, which may be referred to, if desired. For this reason, the present edition of our Instruction Book has been some what abridged and presents a terse description of the func tions and methods of operation of the devices supplied by this company for the equipment of railroads with its air brake and air-signal apparatus.
