Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen, Cleveland's Free Stamp

Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen, Cleveland's Free Stamp PDF Author: Edward J. Olszewski

ISBN: 9780821422717
Category : ART

Book Description
In 1985, the Sohio oil company commissioned Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen to design and construct a large outdoor sculpture for its new corporate headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio. The result was Free Stamp, a bold and distinctive installation that captured both a Pop Art sensibility and a connection to the city's industrial past. Sohio executives approved the design, and work was already underway, when British Petroleum acquired the company. The new owners quickly decided that the sculpture was "inappropriate" for their building and attempted to rid themselves of Free Stamp by donating it to the city of Cleveland--a gift that the city initially had no desire to accept. After much debate and public protest, the sculpture found a home in Willard Park, where it stands today. This is the first study of any sculpture by Oldenburg and van Bruggen to examine the genesis of their art from conception to installation. Edward J. Olszewski has put together a fascinating narrative based on interviews with the artists, archival material from city records, and in-house corporate memoranda, as well as letters to the editor and political cartoons. He traces the development of the sculpture from the artists' first sketches and models to the installation of the completed work in its urban environment.

John Baldessari

John Baldessari PDF Author: Coosje van Bruggen
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 260

Book Description
In three provocative and thoughtful essays, Coosje van Bruggen traces Baldessari's gradual shift from the creation of imagist mind games in the 1960s, through his intellectual analyses of social codes in the late 1970s and early 1980s, to an emphasis on psychological and emotional content in the late 1980s. In addition, the texts provide a chronological overview of the artist's career and a penetrating study of the use of narrative and dream structure in the work of the 1970s and '80s... Over 400 illustrations document Baldessari's extensive oeuvre and include four artist's projects commissioned for this publication, as well as special pieces created for the book jacket and endpapers, a reflection of Baldessari's interest in books as art. A comprehensive exhibition history, including films and videotapes--previously not compiled--a bibliography, and an index, complete the publication. --From jacket.

Book Description
A beautiful book on the famed Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas The Chinati Foundation, a world-famous destination for large-scale contemporary art, was founded by Donald Judd (1928-1994) to preserve and present a select number of permanent installations that were inextricably linked to the surrounding landscape in Marfa, Texas. This handsome publication, first published in 2010 and now available with a new chapter devoted to the permanent installation by Robert Irwin that was inaugurated in 2016 and a new foreword by Jenny Moore, director of the Chinati Foundation, describes how Judd developed his ideas of the role of art and museums from the early 1960s onward, culminating in the creation of Chinati. The individual installations featured here include work by John Chamberlain, Dan Flavin, David Rabinowitch, Roni Horn, Ilya Kabakov, Richard Long, Ingólfur Arnarsson, Carl Andre, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen, and John Wesley, as well as by Judd himself.
