Book Description
Addressing the interaction between military operations and the activities of civilian government agencies, intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) during and after conflict, this study traces the development of civil military operations from their origin during World War II as Civil Affairs and military government to the present array of civil military operations. In so doing, it looks closely at the recent cases of Panama, Kuwait and southern Iraq, the Kurdish rescue mission in northern Iraq, Somalia, and Haiti. Of particular interest is the book's integration of national policy, strategy, and operations as it looks at the interplay between combat operations and their civil, military and political consequences. The outcome of the operations considered here suggests a need to look at the organization and planning of military forces in contemporary conflict as well as the integration of nonmilitary players into the game from the start of operations. The author concludes that the essence of modern conflict can be found in civil military operations.

Soldiers and Civil Power
Author: Thijs Brocades Zaalberg
Publisher: Amsterdam University Press
ISBN: 9053567925
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 529
Book Description
Since the Cold War, peace operations have become the core focus of many Western armed forces. In these operations, the division between civil and military responsibilities often rapidly blurs. Among policy makers and in military circles, a debate has erupted regarding the scope of the military in stabilizing and reconstructing war torn societies. Should soldiers, who primarily prepare for combat duties, observe a strict segregation between the "military sphere" and the "civilian sphere" or become involved in "nation building"? Should soldiers be allowed to venture into the murky arena of public security, civil administration, humanitarian relief, and political and social reconstruction? In Soldiers and Civil Power, Thijs Brocades Zaalberg draws on military records and in-depth interviews with key players to examine international operations in the 1990's in Cambodia, Somalia, Bosnia, and Kosovo. Focusing his historical analysis on the experiences of various battalions in the field, he reveals large gaps between this tactical level of operations, political-strategic decision making and military doctrine. By comparing peace operations to examples of counterinsurgency operations in the colonial era and military governance in World War II, he exposes the controversial, but inescapable role of the Western military in supporting and even substituting civil authorities during military interventions. At a time when US forces and its allies struggle to restore order in Iraq and Afghanistan, Brocades Zaalberg’s in-depth study is an invaluable resource not only for military historians, but anyone interested in the evolving global mission of armed forces in the twenty-first century.

Why buy a book you can download for free? We print the paperback book so you don't have to. First you gotta find a good clean (legible) copy and make sure it's the latest version (not always easy). Some documents found on the web are missing some pages or the image quality is so poor, they are difficult to read. If you find a good copy, you could print it using a network printer you share with 100 other people (typically its either out of paper or toner). If it's just a 10-page document, no problem, but if it's 250-pages, you will need to punch 3 holes in all those pages and put it in a 3-ring binder. Takes at least an hour. It's much more cost-effective to just order the bound paperback from Amazon.com This book includes original commentary which is copyright material. Note that government documents are in the public domain. We print these paperbacks as a service so you don't have to. The books are compact, tightly-bound paperback, full-size (8 1/2 by 11 inches), with large text and glossy covers. 4th Watch Publishing Co. is a HUBZONE SDVOSB. https: //usgovpub.com

Field Manual FM 3-57 Civil Affairs Operations April 2019
Author: United States Government Us Army
Publisher: Independently Published
ISBN: 9781096012757
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 142
Book Description
This publication, Field Manual FM 3-57 Civil Affairs Operations April 2019, provides Army commanders with the information necessary for the integration of Civil Affairs (CA) capabilities in support of unified land operations. It also provides the doctrinal basis for the conduct of Civil Affairs operations (CAO) in support of civil-military operations (CMO).FM 3-57 clarifies the role of CA forces in the execution of CAO, and in support of CMO, with regard to the missions, employment, support requirements, capabilities, and limitations of these forces. CA forces execute CAO in support of unified land operations in all theaters across the range of military operations to achieve unified action. A force multiplier for every commander, CA forces are one of the primary resources a commander has to assist in dealing with the complex and ever-changing civil component of the operational environment (OE). CA forces are trained, organized, and equipped to plan, execute, and assess CAO in support of Army and joint operations. Their cultural orientation, regional expertise, linguistic capabilities, advisory ability, and civilian acquired professional skills paralleling common government functions are essential elements to the successful completion of the commander's mission. The principal audience for FM 3-57 is the leadership of the Army, officers, and senior noncommissioned officers who command Army forces or serve on the staffs that support those commanders of operations at all levels of war. It is also an applicable reference for the civilian leadership of the U.S. interagency organizations. Although written primarily to assist the Army Service component command, Army corps, Army divisions, brigade combat teams, and maneuver enhancement brigades with the integration of CAO in planning, preparing for, executing, and assessing unified land operations, this FM is applicable for joint force operations as well.FM 3-57 applies to the Active Army, the Army National Guard/Army National Guard of the United States, and the United States Army Reserve (USAR) unless otherwise stated. The proponent of FM 3-57 is the U.S. Army Special Operations Center of Excellence, USAJFKSWCS.
