Desde que Henri Poincaré estableció en El valor de la ciencia (1905) que "la ciencia es solo una clasificación", autores tan diversos como Claude Lévi-Strauss, Jack Goody o incluso Michel Foucault (que en Las palabras y las cosas consagra un capítulo entero al acto de "clasificar") han señalado esta identidad constitutiva entre ciencia y clasificación. Como forma de síntesis útil para captar lo real, la clasificación no solamente es el resultado de una exigencia de "puesta en visibilidad", sino que participa igualmente en su construcción.
