Gems of Exquisite Beauty
Author: Peter Mercer-Taylor
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190842806
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 336
Book Description
In the decades leading up to the Civil War, most Americans probably encountered European classical music primarily through hymn tunes. Hymnody was the most popular and commercially successful genre of the antebellum period in the United States, and the unquenchable thirst for new tunes to sing led to a phenomenon largely forgotten today: in their search for fresh material, editors lifted hundreds of tunes from the works of major classical composers to use as settings of psalms and hymns. The few that remain popular today millions have sung "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee" to Beethoven and "Hark, The Herald Angels Sing" to Mendelssohn are vestiges of one of the most distinctive trends in antebellum music-making. Gems of Exquisite Beauty is the first in-depth study of the historical rise and fall of this adaptation practice, its artistic achievements, and its place in nineteenth-century American musical life. It traces the contributions of pioneering figures like Arthur Clifton and the impact of bestsellers like the Handel and Haydn Society Collection, which helped turn Lowell Mason into America's most influential musician. By telling the tales of these hymns and those who brought them into the world, author Peter Mercer-Taylor reveals a central part of the history of how the American public first came to meet and creatively engage with Europe's rich musical practices.

Church Harmonies
Author: Universalist Church of America
Publisher: Forgotten Books

Languages : en
Pages : 378
Book Description
Excerpt from Church Harmonies: A Collection of Hymns and Tunes for the Use of Congregations Fob many years there has been a growing desire in many congregations of the Universalist Church to participate more directly in the service of singing in the public worship. The present Collection of Hymns and Tunes has been made to meet this desire; and the compilers believe they have succeeded in producing a work which will meet the needs of our people. The tunes have been selected with reference to congregational singing only; and as there are hymns so closely associated with old tunes that they suggest one another, and could hardly be divorced, the compilers have not hesitated to insert a tune a number of times, when it seemed best adapted to give expression to the hymns. It is believed that this will be found a valuable and welcome feature of the work. The hymns are mainly those of the fine new collection known among us as the Portland Collection, when published without a liturgy, and as Prayers and Hymns, when published with a liturgy. To make each page complete, it has been found necessary to make an addition of nearly two hundred hymns, all of which add value to the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work.
