Christopher Marlowe: a Biographical and Critical Study
Marlowe: A Critical Study
Author: J. B. Steane
Publisher: CUP Archive
ISBN: 9780521065450
Category : Drama
Languages : en
Pages : 396
Book Description
This is a thorough critical study of Marlowe's entire output - plays, translations and poems - prefaced by a biographical chapter. It is an attempt to provide the 'life and works' study for the general reader. Mr Steane takes the poetry as the centre of his interest; offering a literary judgement on Marlowe's art rather than further discussion of sources and background. He provides a balanced account of a great poetic dramatist, a writer of exceptional power whose poetry also reveals profound human flaws.

Localizing Christopher Marlowe
Author: Arata Ide
Publisher: Boydell & Brewer
ISBN: 1843846934
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 447
Book Description
This study punctures the stereotyped portrayals of Marlowe, first created by his rival Robert Greene, and, yet, which still colour our view. In doing so, Ide reveals the social and cultural discourses out of which such myths emerged. We know next to nothing about the life of the playwright Christopher Marlowe (b.1564 - d. 1593). Few documents survive other than his birth record in the parish register, a handful of legal cases in court records, Privy Council mandates and reports to the Council, the coroner's examination of his death, and a few hearsay accounts of his atheism. With such a limited collection of biographical documents available, it is impossible to retrieve from history a complete sense of Marlowe. However, this does not mean that biography cannot play a significant role in Marlowe studies. By observing the details of the specific places and communities to which Marlowe belonged, this book highlights the collective experiences and concerns of the social groups and communities with which we know he was personally and financially involved. Specifically, Localizing Christopher Marlowe reveals the political and cultural dynamics in the community of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, into which Marlowe was deeply integrated and through which he became affiliated with the circle of Sir Francis Walsingham, mapping these influences in both his life and works.e was personally and financially involved. ISBN: 1107016258
Category : Drama
Languages : en
Pages : 411
Book Description
A contemporary of William Shakespeare and Ben Jonson, Christopher Marlowe was one of the most influential early modern dramatists, whose life and mysterious death have long been the subject of critical and popular speculation. This collection sets Marlowe's plays and poems in their historical context, exploring his world and his wider cultural influence. Chapters by leading international scholars discuss both his major and lesser-known works. Divided into three sections, 'Marlowe's works', 'Marlowe's world', and 'Marlowe's reception', the book ranges from Marlowe's relationship with his own audience through to adaptations of his plays for modern cinema. Other contexts for Marlowe include history and politics, religion and science. Discussions of Marlowe's critics and Marlowe's appeal today, in performance, literature and biography, show how and why his works continue to resonate; and a comprehensive further reading list provides helpful suggestions for those who want to find out more.
