The Rise of Christian Democracy in Europe

The Rise of Christian Democracy in Europe PDF Author: Stathis N. Kalyvas
Publisher: Cornell University Press
ISBN: 1501731416
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 314

Book Description
Although dominant in West European politics for more than a century, Christian Democratic parties remain largely unexplored and little understood. An investigation of how political identities and parties form, this book considers the origins of Christian Democratic "confessional" parties within the political context of Western Europe. Examining five countries where a successful confessional party emerged (Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Germany, and Italy) and one where it did not (France), Stathis N. Kalyvas addresses perplexing questions raised by the Christian Democratic phenomenon. How can we reconcile the religious roots of these parties with their tremendous success and resilience in secular and democratic Western Europe? Why have these parties discarded their initial principles and objectives to become secular forces governing secular societies? The author's answers reveal the way in which social and political actors make decisions based on self-interest under conditions that constrain their choices and the information they rely on—often with unintended but irrevocable consequences.Kalyvas also lays a foundation for a theory of the Christian Democratic phenomenon which would specify the conditions under which confessional parties succeed and would determine the impact of such parties, and the way they are formed, on politics and society. Drawing from political science, sociology, and history, his analysis goes beyond Christian Democracy to address issues related to the methodology of political science, the theory of party formation, the political development of Europe, the relationship between religion and politics, the construction of collective political identities, and the role of agency and contingency in politics.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Position of the Evangelical Party in the Episcopal Church IT is from no desire to intermeddle with the inter nal affairs of another denomination of Christians, that we introduce to our readers the subject which we have placed at the head of this article. Nor is it from any wish to take advantage of the present troubles and growing dissensions of' the Episcopal Church to make converts to our better faith, or to make reprisals for the accessions which they have sought to gain from the disputes and divisions of other denominations. We have listened in calmer times with preper interest to their proclamations of their own unity, while other churches have been rent into factions, or threatened with schism. We have seen a few from other churches, charmed with this proclamation of' unity, and professedly won by the hope of peace, leave the connections in which they were trained, and attach themselves to Episco pacy. But they have not been men whose departure the churches have had occasion to regard as a serious calamity, or whose recovery would be worth any very serious efi'ort. We are content that they should minister in their new connection, we hope with greater. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Power Made Perfect?

Power Made Perfect? PDF Author: Timothy R. A. Sherratt
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1498225950
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 161

Book Description
How would politics be different if Christians acknowledged Jesus Christ as the archetype of all rulers, democratic and nondemocratic? How would our practice of politics change if we recognized the suffering love of Christ as the truest exercise of power? Power Made Perfect? offers a distinctive approach to government and politics. It is important, the author argues, to ask how creation provides guidance for political conduct; for politics to be an exercise in piety; and to approach politics in a fallen world with prudence and not in pursuit of ultimate solutions. But it is even more important to begin with Jesus Christ. Christ is the rightful ruler of the world who exercises power by suffering and dying for guilty humans. All political activity is held to the standard of Christ's sacrifice. In this book, Timothy Sherratt surveys major Christian political initiatives and schools of Christian political thought, with a particular emphasis on American politics, before outlining ways in which Christians in churches can practice faithful political engagement.
