The first volume presents a detailed study of the faculties of the human mind and their interrelations. The second volume presents arguments for the existence of God and for God's infinite perfection. Pages : 290

Book Description
This third book in a series of successful introductory textbooks by Craig Bartholomew and Michael Goheen builds on their previous projects, The Drama of Scripture and Living at the Crossroads, to offer a comprehensive narrative of philosophical thought from a distinctly Christian perspective. After exploring the interaction among Scripture, worldview, theology, and philosophy, the authors tell the story of philosophy from ancient Greece through postmodern times, positioning the philosophers in their historical contexts and providing Christian critique along the way. The authors emphasize the Reformed philosophical tradition without neglecting other historical trajectories and show how philosophical thought relates to contemporary life.

Thinking in Tongues

Thinking in Tongues PDF Author: James K. A. Smith
Publisher: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing
ISBN: 0802861849
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 182

Book Description
The past several decades have seen a renaissance in Christian philosophy, led by the work of Alvin Plantinga, Nicholas Wolterstorff, William Alston, Eleonore Stump, and others. In the spirit of Plantinga s famous manifesto, Advice to Christian Philosophers, James K. A. Smith here offers not only advice to Pentecostal philosophers but also some Pentecostal advice to Christian philosophers. In this inaugural Pentecostal Manifestos volume Smith begins from the conviction that implicit in Pentecostal and charismatic spirituality is a tacit worldview or social imaginary. Thinking in Tongues unpacks and articulates the key elements of this Pentecostal worldview and then explores their implications for philosophical reflection on ontology, epistemology, aesthetics, language, science, and philosophy of religion. In each case, Smith demonstrates how the implicit wisdom of Pentecostal spirituality makes unique contributions to current conversations in Christian philosophy.

Christian Philosophy in the Patristic and Byzantine Tradition

Christian Philosophy in the Patristic and Byzantine Tradition PDF Author: Basil Tatakis
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781933275161
Category : Byzantine Empire
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Tatakis is a real master of thought, a philosopher who theologizes, or, putting it otherwise, a philosopher who takes theology seriously and brings out its insights dressed in philosophical form. The result is indeed a most fruitful synthesis of philosophy and religion; a philosophy of religion, or more accurately, a religious philosophy. It is a Christian philosophy, which is possible, because this is indeed the legacy of Byzantium, that priceless alabaster of Eastern Orthodox Christianity of which Tatakis has been a key exponent and interpreter. It is precisely this Greek Orthodox Christian synthesis that this volume explains in a straightforward, comprehensive and profound way. This work is a real companion to Tatakis' earlier work on Byzantine Philosophy, laying the emphasis on the content of Byzantine thought and its characteristic religious bent, Greek Orthodox Christianity, as distinct from its history and literature, which are more typical of the earlier work. There are certain overlaps between the two books, but this one brings out more clearly the Greek Orthodox theological dimension in Tatakis' thought which deserves to be explored much more than it has. It reveals the great soul of this extraordinary man who is both a philosopher and a man of faith and theology; and who, in spite of the exigencies of life (as he describes them very movingly in his last and most interesting book - the book of his life - published posthumously in 1993), has left us the strength and the aroma of the Greek Orthodox spirit and nobility.

Book Description
Excerpt from Christian Philosophy, Vol. 1 Christian philosophy is necessarily founded upon conceptions of the nature of God, of the origin and nature of the universe, and of the relation of God to the universe and to man. In our time, the greatest con fusion exists, even within the precincts of the Christian chui ch, with regard to these fundamental ideas and conceptions which contradict each other are recognized, either from an external eclecticism, or from an internal inversion by the Destructive Reason with the view to confound opposite ideas in the interest of a nihilistic or of a pantheistic philosophy. This perversion and inver Sion of Christian thought are produced by transcendental philosophy (german in origin) and by evolutionary sci ence (english in origin), which work together to establish in the Church an Antichristian, materialistic, and panthe istic philosophy. There is, in our century, and extending to all departments of intelligence, a renaissance of Pagan thought quite analogous to that effected in the fifteenth century and onward, and our period, equally with that, calls for a new birth or regeneration of Christian thought from a more universal insight into the fundamental ideas of Christianity. From 'the very need of it, therefore, we may look for a new dogmatic form of Christian theology that shall iļ¬‚corporate the fundamental and primitive ideas of Christianity, as an historical institution, in forms of imaginative thought which Shall correspond to that more internal condition of the Reason and of the Re.
