Book Description
Excerpt from Christian Ethics, Vol. 2: Pure Ethics Christianity, but thus far no one has yet done for Christian Ethics in our literature, what Danaens and Calixtus did for it in the Reformed and Lutheran Churches of continental Europe. The Science of Christian Ethics is with us almost unknown. Too many of our least suspected manuals, written by honored and able evangelical divines, presuppose and continually imply a Socinian anthropology, and a worse than Romish soteriology. Book Description

There are, also, many pit falls of treatment, which prove disastrous to the unwary. Two of them, at any rate, I have tried to avoid, (1) swamping Christian Ethics in Christian Theology, and (2) separating the two provinces so absolutely as to convey the impression that they have no relation to each other. I have, further, endeavoured to respect the sense of proportion in the topics handled. Beyond this, I need make no explanation. The little treatise must explain itself. Christian Ethics

Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 414

Book Description
Excerpt from Christian Ethics: Special Part; Second Division: Social Ethics The moral life of society is developed in the Family and I the State; in the mid-regions or departments of Culture, Art, and Science; and, lastly, in the Church, whose inmost core is the Communion of saints. These several social organisms are to be regarded, on the one hand, as possessions, and hence as realized aims, in which man finds satisfaction, profit, pleasure; on the other, as moral individuals on a large scale, having each its special office to discharge. And I, the small individual, am to be a personal member of one and another of these social circles, to occupy with respect to them a relation at once of co-operation and appropriation, of toleration and devotion, while constantly aiming at my own perfection and the perfection of the whole. One essential side of man's destination is displayed in each of the social circles, and the purpose of Christianity is to develope the "new man" within each. It is in proportion as the Christian ideal of human nature is realized in them, that the kingdom of God attains a social, and at the same time an individual, appearance on earth. The kingdom of God, however, neither does nor can attain its perfection in this world. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. System of Christian Ethics (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Gottlieb Christoph Adolf von Harless

Book Description
Excerpt from System of Christian Ethics And this anxiety is of a twofold kind. In the first place, it refers to the plan of the whole treatise. In science generally, but in theology from quite peculiar grounds, it appears to me a matter of doubtful propriety when a department of knowledge which is a common possession has not also a certain common form of treat ment, so that one immediately perceives from the style of discussion whether what is new is meant merely to attempt a better establish ment of an old knowledge of the truth. Where this mode of treatment is unnecessarily departed from, there arises not only the danger of ministering, even if involuntarily, to that craving after novelty which loves not what is true, but only what is new; but one also cuts asunder deliberately the threads of connection which bind to one another the different stages of culture and of knowledge. Book Description
Excerpt from Christian Ethics, Vol. 1 In virtue of his firm and independent nature - partly inborn and partly developed in the severe school of experience - he felt also a pressing need of a firmly-based construction of his theo logical views, and of a clear, distinct, and unambiguous ex pression of the same. This need was in part met by the Lutheran form of doctrine. It is true, he saw very clearly the defects and imperfections which a scientific construction and demonstration of this doctrinal formula bring to light; taking into consideration, however, its essential features, he found in it the purest and truest didactic presentation of evangelical truth.* To preserve this form of the truth in its main features.
