Book Description
2012 Reprint of Original 1894 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Many have come to discover the writings of William Law through the publication of selections of his work edited by Andrew Murray. "A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life" (1728) deeply influenced the chief actors in the great Evangelical revival. John and Charles Wesley, George Whitefield, Henry Venn, Thomas Scott, and Thomas Adam all express their deep obligation to the author. "The Serious Call" also affected others deeply. Samuel Johnson, ] Gibbon, Lord Lyttelton and Bishop Home all spoke enthusiastically of its merits; and it is still the only work by which its author is popularly known. It has high merits of style, being lucid and pointed to a degree. Though not the most popular, perhaps the most interesting, original and suggestive of all Law's works are those he wrote in his later years, after he had become an enthusiastic admirer of Jacob Boehme, the Teutonic theosopher. From his earliest years, he had been deeply impressed with the piety, beauty and thoughtfulness of the writings of the Christian mystics. However, it was not till after his accidental meeting with the works of Boehme, about 1734, that pronounced mysticism appeared in his works.

Excerpt from How to Succeed in the Christian Life What does it mean to receive Jesus Christ? It means to take Christ to be to yourself all that God offers Him to be to everybody. Jesus Christ is God's gift. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life (john 3: Some accept this wondrous gift of God. Every one who does accept this gift becomes a Child of God. Many others refuse this wondrous gift of God, and every one who refuses this gift of God perishes. He is condemned already. He that believeth on the Son is not condemned, but he that believeth not is condemned already because he hath not believed in the name of the only be gotten Son of God (john 3. Book Description
Excerpt from The Teaching of Jesus, Concerning the Christian Life He was right. Some men do not give religion any place in their lives. They think they can do without it. They have other aims which they consider higher, or to which they give more care ful attention. Others seek religion and hold it in esteem, but they do not make it the principal thing. They think more of something else. Religion has a place in their lives, as they suppose, but it is a low place, an Obscure corner. It does not come to the front. But those who give religion no place or a low place in their lives not only act contrary to their own reason and higher impulses, but they violate the Whole spirit of revelation, and especially the definite and repeated teachings and commands and expostula tions of Jesus. Book Description
Excerpt from Sermons on the Christian Life The following sermons were written and preached when the author was a Pastor. They are not dis eussions of doctrine; they are sermons on various aspects and elements of human life. These are treated in their relations to Christianity. But the doctrines of Christianity, though not expounded, are implied. They underlie and support each discourse. As the sermons were prepared, not for publication, but for delivery before the writer's congregation, their style and language often approach those of familiar conversation. In addressing his parishioners, a preacher feels that he is at liberty to indulge in abrupt turns of speech, in sentences rhetorically in complete and in repetitions, which, in an essay, would be out of place. The form of the sermon is deter mined by the relations of the preacher to his audience, quite as much as it is by his theme. Excerpt from The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life I have committed my book to the Lord, and have asked Him to counteract all in it that is wrong, and to let only that which is true find entrance into any heart. It is sent out in tender sympathy and yearn ing love for all the struggling, weary ones in the Church of Christ, iand its message goes right from my heart to theirs. I have given the best I have, and could do no more. May the blessed Holy Spirit use it to teach some of my readers the true secret of a happy life! Book Description
Excerpt from Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life The New Testament is essentially a modern book. En grafted into the life and permeating the thought of the centuries as is the power of its Central Figure, the one thing that impresses the student more than all else, as he endeavors to catch the spirit of New Testament teaching, is its thor oughly modern tone. The setting is local and Oriental, but the principles and their application are universal and human. The discourses here gathered together are an attempt to select from a ministry extending over a period of ten years, most of it in a single pulpit, the ruling ideas and efforts of that ministry to present a spherical view of the application of the Christian gospel to the whole of modern life, as we live it in America. Carrying out this purpose, I have made several excursions into the region of apostolic psychology; then again, I have tried to apply the teachings of Christ to the social and political life of our time, an experiment always fruitful of danger and misunderstanding, but none the less necessary for that. I have further outlined the relations of Christianity to our educational ideas and method, especially the place of the Bible in university instruction, following this with a literary criticism or two, in which I have made some observations on the literary and dramatic portraiture of gospel ideas. Then, too, I have added a number of dis courses on the spiritual life itself, as distinguished from the various modes of it which I have been describing. Excerpt from The Life of the Christian And Barnabas went forth to Tarsus to seek for Saul; and when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that even for a whole year they were gathered together with the church, and taught much people; and that the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch. Acts xi. 25-26.
