This volume will be the first to focus on the transcultural exchange between Ashkenazic Jewry and China. The book breaks new ground in the field, covering such new topics as the images of China in Yiddish and German Jewish letters, the intersectionality of the Jewish and Chinese literature in illuminating the implications for a truly global and inclusive world literature, the biographies of prominent figures in Chinese-Jewish connections, the Chabad engagement in contemporary China. Some of the fundamental debates in the current scholarship will also be addressed, with a special emphasis on how many Jewish refugees arrived in Shanghai and how much interaction occurred between the Jewish refugees and the resident Chinese population during the wartime and its aftermath.

A collection of essays translated from the English, some of them published previously. Pp. 62-91, "Ha-ya'ad Shanghai: Heterei kenissah ve-asherot ma'avar, 1938-1941" ("Destination Shanghai: Entry Permits and Transit Certificates, 1939-1941"), discuss the immigration of European Jews to Shanghai during the Holocaust. After the "Kristallnacht" pogrom thousands of Jews were forced by the Nazis to leave Germany and Austria; since most countries would not accept them, many fled to Shanghai. The port and a part of the city were officially extra-territorial, and there was no passport inspection. In August 1939 both the Japanese authorities and the Shanghai Municipal Council, fearing a huge influx of poverty-stricken refugees, restricted immigration; however, the restrictions varied, and many Jews managed to obtain permits. In July 1940 there were further restrictions, but by then it had become more difficult to leave Europe in any case.

In the aftermath of the Shoah and the ostensible triumph of nationalism, it became common in historiography to relegate Jews to the position of the “eternal other” in a series of binaries: Christian/Jewish, Gentile/Jewish, European/Jewish, non-Jewish/Jewish, and so forth. For the longest time, these binaries remained characteristic of Jewish historiography, including in the Central European context. Assuming instead, as the more recent approaches in Habsburg studies do, that pluriculturalism was the basis of common experience in formerly Habsburg Central Europe, and accepting that no single “majority culture” existed, but rather hegemonies were imposed in certain contexts, then the often used binaries are misleading and conceal the complex and sometimes even paradoxical conditions that shaped Jewish life in the region before the Shoah. The very complexity of Habsburg Central Europe both in synchronic and diachronic perspective precludes any singular historical narrative of “Habsburg Jewry,” and it is not the intention of this volume to offer an overview of “Habsburg Jewish history.” The selected articles in this volume illustrate instead how important it is to reevaluate categories, deconstruct historical narratives, and reconceptualize implemented approaches in specific geographic, temporal, and cultural contexts in order to gain a better understanding of the complex and pluricultural history of the Habsburg Empire and the region as a whole.
