Child Adoption PDF Author: United Nations. Department of Economic and Social Affairs. Population Division
Publisher: United Nations Publications
ISBN: 9789211514667
Category : Business & Economics

Pages : 463

Book Description
Adoption is one of the oldest social institutions. Nevertheless, adoption still raises highly emotive issues because of its fundamental implications for the familial ties. This publication provides a solid foundation for furthering research on child adoption and, more specifically, on the demographic factors that shape the demand for and the availability of adoptable children. The focus of this report is on the nexus between adoption policies and trends at the national and global levels. Understanding adoption policies and their origins is all the more important today because, as adoption has become global, inconsistencies among the legal principles and traditions regarding adoption in different countries are increasingly coming to the fore.--Publisher'sdescription.

Adoption Update

Adoption Update PDF Author: Victor Littel
Publisher: Nova Publishers
ISBN: 9781590335048
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 134

Book Description
The need to provide children with caring family environment and proper nurturing is generally recognised as integral to society. Sadly, many children lack such benefits; the reasons for this state can vary. The children may be orphaned, unwanted by their parents, taken from hostile home situations, or the victims of some other unfortunate circumstances. The process of adoption, however, gives hope to these children and lets foster parents build a family. Generally the states have jurisdiction over adoption, making for a morass of laws and standards in child welfare. The federal government does, though, maintain an interest in promoting adoption, and Congress has proposed and enacted several pieces legislation giving tax credits and other incentives to encourage adoption in the hopes of safeguarding the future of the nation's children. An important look at the present status of the adoption process and its implementation in America, this book collects a set of articles that analyse adoption from several different perspectives. These views examine issues from the aforementioned government tax credits to the nettlesome topic of adopting foreign children. Also included is the chapter on the controversial subject of adoption by homosexual couples. With such a broad array of coverage, this book is an important resource in keeping abreast of the United States' adoption process.

The Children in Families First Act

The Children in Families First Act PDF Author: Nila Bala

Book Description
Our international adoption system, too often, resembles a market without oversight, plagued by a lack of accountability. There are gaps in pre-adoption protections-- including screening for child trafficking and corruption before validating intercountry adoptions. There is also a necessity for post-adoption services to prevent children from being advertised on online forums and “re-homed.” The current applicable legislation--the Intercountry Adoption Act of 2000 (IAA)--falls short of providing sufficient pre-adoption safeguards and completely neglects the necessity for post-adoption safeguards. Unfortunately, as will be discussed below, many government leaders in 2013 supported the Children in Families First Act (CHIFF), legislation that hoped to increase the number of international adoptions, without addressing the problems that currently exist. CHIFF puts children at risk by weakening the IAA and the Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Co-Operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption (Hague Convention), which have at least provided for some pre-adoption protections. Additionally, like the IAA, CHIFF fails to provide for post-adoption assistance.

The Best Interests of the Child in Intercountry Adoption

The Best Interests of the Child in Intercountry Adoption PDF Author: Nigel Cantwell
Publisher: UN
ISBN:
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 96

Book Description
This study explores the best interests principle in intercountry adoption. It investigates what role the best interests principle should play in intercountry adoption and the overall conditions required for it to do so in keeping with the rights of the child. Sections include: best interests, human rights and intercountry adoption; the role and purpose of the best interests concept in a human rights context; the changing role and purpose of intercountry adoption; determining children's best interests in intercountry adoption; and ensuring the right conditions for a best interests determination in intercountry adoption. While there is general agreement that the best interests of the child should be the paramount consideration in intercountry adoption, there is no consensus on who decides what is in a child's best interests or on what basis that decision should be made.
