Book Description
This report describes the results of the sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka smolt monitoring project conducted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in the Chignik River system in 2021 and 2022. The research was designed to assess fish body condition and document relative abundance and outmigration timing in the Chignik River watershed. Sockeye salmon smolt were captured using a beach seine in Chignik Lagoon. In 2021, 1,348 ageable scale samples were collected. Of these, 974 (72.3%) were freshwater-age-1 and 370 (27.5%) were freshwater-age-2 smolt. In 2022, 1,378 ageable scale samples were collected. Of these, 752 (54.6%) were freshwater-age-1 and 377 (27.4%) were freshwater-age-2 smolt. Sockeye smolt were of above-average body condition in 2021 and 2022 when compared to historical data.

Book Description
This report describes the results of the sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka smolt monitoring project conducted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in the Chignik River system in 2019 and 2020. The research was designed to assess fish body condition and document relative abundance and timing in the Chignik watershed. Sockeye salmon smolt were captured using a beach seine in Chignik Lagoon. In 2019, 1,175 usable samples were collected. Of these, 504 (43.0%) were freshwater-age-0; 645 (54.9%) were freshwater-age-1; and 26 (2.2%) were freshwater-age-2 smolt. In 2020, 1,663 usable samples were collected. Of these, 56 (3.4%) were freshwater-age-0; 1,569 (94.3%) were freshwater-age-1; and 38 (2.3%) were freshwater-age-2 smolt. Sockeye smolt were of above-average body condition in 2019 whereas in 2020, smolt were about average compared to historical data.

Book Description
This operational plan describes the procedures for the sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka smolt sampling project conducted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) in the Chignik River system. The project goal is to evaluate and document size and abundance trends of sockeye salmon smolt in the Chignik River system to understand rearing capacity and habitat use. The research is designed to assess age structure, fish body condition, and provide additional context for the adult sockeye salmon forecast. Age structure of the population will be estimated from scales of sockeye salmon smolt collected using a beach seine. Juvenile salmon habitat use will be examined by beach seining in near-shore marine environment. Findings from this project are vital for understanding effects of the commercial fishery and environmental changes occurring in the Chignik River system on the sockeye salmon population.

Book Description
In the Chignik Management Area (Area L), the Chignik weir is the primary mode of enumeration for sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka into the Chignik River. Annually, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) samples salmon escapement at the Chignik weir for age, sex, and length (ASL) data. The biological information collected from salmon escapements provide the foundation for preseason run forecasts, escapement goal evaluation, and run reconstruction. Every week throughout the season, 240 sockeye salmon are sampled. Sockeye salmon scales are collected using established protocols common to the Westward Region.

Book Description
This report summarizes the results of the 2018 Alaska Peninsula Management Area (Area M) and Chignik Management Area (CMA; Area L) salmon catch and escapement sampling programs. The purpose of this report is to serve as a compilation of data; interpretation and discussion of these data are limited. Sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka escapements and smolt were sampled throughout these management areas. In Area M, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) operated weirs at Bear River, Ilnik River, Nelson River, Orzinski Lake, and Sandy River; and in the CMA, ADF&G sampled sockeye salmon at the Chignik River weir. The projects estimated escapement and collected age, sex, and length data from adult salmon. Age, weight, and length data were collected from outmigrating sockeye salmon smolt from Bear and Orzinski rivers. The age structure of the late run of sockeye salmon to Bear River, the Nelson River sockeye salmon run, and Chignik early- and late-sockeye salmon runs were estimated from the available escapement and catch data associated with those systems and used for run reconstruction and brood table development.

This project will continue the Genetic Stock Identification (GSI) project on sockeye salmon escaping through the Chignik weir following protocol established by the Gene Conservation Laboratory (GCL) of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G). Concurrent with ASL sampling, 190 fish at each of 6 strata (1,140 total samples) during the transition period will have the left axillary process collected and sent to Anchorage for analysis for post-season stock apportionment of Chignik River early- and late-run sockeye salmon.
