The Politics of Passion

The Politics of Passion PDF Author: Norman Bethune
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 9780802009074
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 424

Book Description
The Politics of Passion is the first comprehensive collection of the writing and art of Dr Norman Bethune. A Canadian medical pioneer and a communist, Bethune gained fame during the 1930s while serving in the Spanish Civil War and participating in China's struggle against Japanese invasion. This book sheds light on the man, the artist, and the revolutionary. It uncovers new historical material relating to several controversies surrounding Bethune. A remarkable document obtained from the Communist International Archives in Moscow, for instance, discusses why Bethune was sent home in disgrace from the Spanish Civil War. It refers to a mysterious Swedish woman, Kajsa von Rothman, who was Bethune's lover and who was believed by left-wing Spanish authorities to be politically suspect. This collection of Bethune's writings and art reveals that politics preoccupied him only during the last four years of his life. Earlier, his passionate nature found expression in medical and surgical innovation, as well as in painting, sketching, photography, writing - from poetry and short stories to letters, radio broadcasts, and plays - and public speaking. The Politics of Passion reveals the many sides of Bethune's identity, exploring not only the life of a revolutionary doctor, but of an intense and compassionate artist.

Passion and Principle

Category : Biography & Autobiography

Book Description
John Charles Främont was the illegitimate child of a Virginia aristocrat and a working-class French immigrant; Jessie Benton was the daughter of the most powerful pre-Civil War U.S. senator, Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri, and, her gender notwithstanding, had been groomed as much as any young man to be president. Senator Benton unwittingly brought the two together, never imagining that his daughter would fall in love with Främont. Despite their disparate backgrounds, however, John and Jessie?s marriage was one of the most storied events of the nineteenth century. And indeed, Jessie and John made a formidable couple. Both together and apart they contributed significantly to shaping the United States. He was a key figure in western expansion and the first presidential candidate for the Republican Party. She was a savvy political operator who played confidante and adviser to the highest political powers in the country. Despite their great efforts on behalf of their country, however, their reputations did not survive a Washington smear campaign led by none other than Jessie?s father. Written with an investigative journalist?s eye for detail and a novelist?s flair, this biography of explorer, politician, and gold-mine owner John C. Främont and his intellectual wife, Jessie Benton Främont, also casts light on the tumultuous period that forms the backdrop for their lives, from the abolition of slavery to the building of the railroad.

DADA, Surrealism, and the Cinematic Effect

DADA, Surrealism, and the Cinematic Effect PDF Author: R. Bruce Elder
Publisher: Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press
ISBN: 1554586410
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 777

Book Description
This book deals with the early intellectual reception of the cinema and the manner in which art theorists, philosophers, cultural theorists, and especially artists of the first decades of the twentieth century responded to its advent. While the idea persists that early writers on film were troubled by the cinema’s lowly form, this work proposes that there was another, largely unrecognized, strain in the reception of it. Far from anxious about film’s provenance in popular entertainment, some writers and artists proclaimed that the cinema was the most important art for the moderns, as it exemplified the vibrancy of contemporary life. This view of the cinema was especially common among those whose commitments were to advanced artistic practices. Their notions about how to recast the art media (or the forms forged from those media’s materials) and the urgency of doing so formed the principal part of the conceptual core of the artistic programs advanced by the vanguard art movements of the first half of the twentieth century. This book, a companion to the author’s previous, Harmony & Dissent, examines the Dada and Surrealist movements as responses to the advent of the cinema.

A Passion for Life

A Passion for Life PDF Author: Cheng-Wen Wu
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9812838414
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 381

Book Description
This is a biography of Dr Felicia Wu. Felicia was a scientist with a successful career in cancer research, but what marked the most extraordinary aspect about her life was her journey as a truly brave cancer patient and an incredibly determined cancer fighter. Originally, this book was intended to be an autobiography written and narrated by Felicia herself. She wanted to share with other cancer sufferers her 13 long years of experience fighting cancer to prepare them for the side effects and uncertainties of the treatment, and also to encourage them to brace and face their own treatment without fear. What she did not realize then was that her time was ticking away, and her life trickling off quickly. Writing her own autobiography proved to be an impossible task. Felicia succumbed to the prolonged battle and departed from this world. Her husband, Dr Cheng-Wen Wu, finished the uncompleted task of writing the book in loving memory of her. The biography of Felicia, originally published in Chinese edition, has been recommended as a reading model for students in schools and was nominated for an award in Taiwan. Felicia''s story had also inspired the production of a documentary film entitled, OC A Passion for Life, OCO funded and sponsored by The American Cancer Society. This biography of Felicia in English edition, painstakingly translated by Dr Cheng-Wen Wu and his collaborating translator, Ms Annie Chen, will certainly live up to its original premise as an inspiration to touch more lives and as a source of strength to all who encounter difficulty, disappointment and hurt at any point of their lives. Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 267

Book Description
The first volume to focus exclusively on lesbian performance work, Acts of Passion: Sexuality, Gender, and Performance draws on the experiences and expertise of a wide range of lesbian practitioners and theorists to explore the impact and influences of sexuality and gender on performance. It examines essays, dialogues, and performance texts from theater directors, performers, theorists, playwrights, and performance writers against social and cultural constructs and performance theories to produce a diverse and challenging portrait of lesbian live performance art. The book’s penetrating scope covers drag queens, lesbian vampires, representations of lesbian sex, solo artists, the art of collaboration, lesbian aesthetics, and lesbian playwrights writing straight and illustrates why live performance is one of the most dynamic forums in which women can create, control, and produce their work without artistic constraint. Acts of Passion explodes binary definitions of gender and sexuality by destabilizing familiar notions of the ‘real’and creating new production values and aesthetics in the process. The relationships between experience and expression, sexuality and cultural placing, context and artistic control, representation and self-representation become clearer as the book discusses: the manner in which women are represented as absent in the signifying system of patriarchal society how questions of purity, ‘authenticity,’and self-definition complicate the field of representation the power of lesbian dance performance to make the lesbian body culturally visible several ‘new wave’performers--creating work, getting seen, showing flesh, doing politics, and making money the projections, preconceptions, expectations, and general baggage attached to the performing lesbian body what the term ‘lesbian playwright’means within contemporary culture ‘It’s Queer Up North’--a British National Arts Organization the arguments for and against mainstreaming lesbian performance Anyone interested in theater and performance, cultural studies, gender issues, and the politics of ‘positive representation’--whether playwright, performer, director, writer, academic, student, or theatre goer--will find Acts of Passion a powerful step in wrenching the power of representation away from the dominant culture. Defiant, saucy, sexy, and smart, the contributors appropriate their own spaces, identities, crafts, and languages, both within this book and without.
