God of Comics
Author: Natsu Onoda Power
Publisher: Univ. Press of Mississippi
ISBN: 1604734787
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 220
Book Description
Cartoonist Osamu Tezuka (1928?1989) is the single most important figure in Japanese post-World War II comics. During his four-decade career, Tezuka published more than 150,000 pages of comics, produced animation films, wrote essays and short fiction, and earned a Ph.D. in medicine. Along with creating the character Astro Boy (Mighty Atom in Japan), he is best known for establishing story comics as the mainstream genre in the Japanese comic book industry, creating narratives with cinematic flow and complex characters. This style influenced all subsequent Japanese output. God of Comics chronicles Tezuka's life and works, placing his creations both in the cultural climate and in the history of Japanese comics. The book emphasizes Tezuka's use of intertextuality. His works are filled with quotations from other texts and cultural products, such as film, theater, opera, and literature. Often, these quoted texts and images bring with them a world of meanings, enriching the narrative. Tezuka also used stock characters and recurrent visual jokes as a way of creating a coherent world that encompasses all of his works. God of Comics includes close analysis of Tezuka's lesser-known works, many of which have never been translated into English. It offers one of the first in-depth studies of Tezuka's oeuvre to be published in English.

Urban Culture in Pre-War Japan
Author: Adam Thorin Croft
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429748892
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 289
Book Description
Politically the 1910s and 1920s were dark days for Japan: economic instability, frequent political assassinations, and increasing violent military interventions at home and overseas affected many. This book explores the literature of the period, showing how it contributed to this overall mood. It focuses on the Tatsukawa Library, an unusual collection of military chronicles based on traditions of popular storytelling found in the yose — a network of small theatrical venues that provided the masses living and working in Japan’s major cities with affordable entertainment. Capitalising on local advances in Western-style printing, the series facilitated a ‘new wave’ of literature that appealed especially to young, marginalised, economically-insecure urban youths. This book discusses how the narrative content of the Tatsukawa Library, which focuses on historical samurai struggling valiantly against adverse circumstances, helped inspire a generation with admiration for violence. This work also examines how this outlook fitted with the Japanese state’s reintroduction of imperial propaganda.

Pages : 216
Book Description
After the murder of a friend, teen gods and demigods join forces to face a common threat, but unexpected romantic feelings complicate their mission. Poseidon asks Prometheus and his troop of young gods aboard the Marcella II to search for pirates and their ship, the Tarantula. But in a twist of events that even the legendary gods couldn’t see coming, the Marcella II is found first, the young gods are captured, Prometheus is beheaded, and a mortal friend is killed. Shocked by this turn of events, Hades recruits demigods Gertie and Hector to join in the effort to rescue the young gods and uncover the secret of the vampire pirate organization. But love and duty collide, and nothing goes as expected. This brand-new series shares the world of The Underworld Saga and The Vampires of Athens but can be read first or independently of the others.
