With the 1981 publication of the groundbreaking anthology This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color, Cherríe Moraga and Gloria Anzaldúa ushered in an era of Chicana lesbian writing. But while these two writers have achieved iconic status, observers of the Chicana/o experience have been slow to perceive the existence of a whole community—lesbian and straight, male as well as female—who write about the Chicana lesbian experience. To create a first full map of that community, this book explores a wide range of plays, novels, and short stories by Chicana/o authors that depict lesbian characters or lesbian desire. Catrióna Rueda Esquibel starts from the premise that Chicana/o communities, theories, and feminisms cannot be fully understood without taking account of the perspectives and experiences of Chicana lesbians. This dissertation focuses on the coming-out process of Chicana lesbians as they are portrayed in novels written by Chicanas. Since the coming-out process distills issues of identity, a better understanding of Chicana lesbian identities will be gleaned. My research focuses on how the Chicana lesbian is marked as `Other" and how Chicanismo has muted her voice and marginalized her. It is the goal of this dissertation to voice the silences enacted on this segment of the population. Chapter One focuses on a genealogy of Chicana writing and examines how the Chicana has been traditionally portrayed in Chicano literature. Chapter Two introduces the theoretical frameworks--Judith Butler's theory of performance and Paula M.L. Moya's post positivist realist theory--which will be utilized to examine questions of identity. Chapter Three focuses on Sheila Ortiz Taylor's Faultline (1982) as an example of a coming-out novel that deploys Butler's theory of performance while trying to erase the gender binary. Chapter Four analyzes Terri de la Peña's Margins (1992) focusing on the heterogeneity of the Chicana lesbian experience and demonstrates that the coming-out process is also a heterogenous process that is never fully complete. This chapter deploys Moya's postpositivist realist theory of identity, showing that the socio-text of the novel influences in the construction of identities as tied to historical discourses while also pointing to the political consequences inherent in coming out. Chapter Five analyzes Carla Trujillo's What Night Brings (2003) showing that the creation of a space and a discourse is necessary in order for the Chicana lesbian to live as a lesbian in a community that is unwelcoming of her sexuality. What Night Brings open up literary space for Chicana lesbians as is evidenced by the young 11 year-old protagonist who is dealing with issues of sexuality. The agency bestowed to this young narrator in asserting a Chicana lesbian identity signals a shift in Chicano/a literature. Chapter Six is an Afterword that focuses on the space of Chicana lesbian literature, highlighting more recent literary works that have yet to be studied. All three creative pieces--Faultline, Margins, What Night Brings--focus on the coming-out process of the characters which is markedly different from a coming-of-age narrative because of the political ramifications inherent in voicing and embracing a lesbian identity. By charting the coming-out process in each novel, I argue that essential views of identity formation are not valid, and instead propose that the experience of the Chicana lesbian is heterogeneous, creating identities that are plural, dynamic, and in constant negotiation with the world.

Since the 1980s Chicana writers including Gloria Anzaldúa, Cherríe Moraga, Sandra Cisneros, Ana Castillo, and Alma Luz Villanueva have reworked iconic Mexican cultural symbols such as mother earth goddesses and La Llorona (the Wailing Woman of Mexican folklore), re-imagining them as powerful female figures. After reading the works of Chicana writers who created bold, powerful, and openly sexual female characters, Debra J. Blake wondered how everyday Mexican American women would characterize their own lives in relation to the writers’ radical reconfigurations of female sexuality and gender roles. To find out, Blake gathered oral histories from working-class and semiprofessional U.S. Mexicanas. In Chicana Sexuality and Gender, she compares the self-representations of these women with fictional and artistic representations by academic-affiliated, professional intellectual Chicana writers and visual artists, including Alma M. López and Yolanda López. Blake looks at how the Chicana professional intellectuals and the U.S. Mexicana women refigure confining and demeaning constructions of female gender roles and racial, ethnic, and sexual identities. She organizes her analysis around re-imaginings of La Virgen de Guadalupe, La Llorona, indigenous Mexica goddesses, and La Malinche, the indigenous interpreter for Hernán Cortés during the Spanish conquest. In doing so, Blake reveals how the professional intellectuals and the working-class and semiprofessional women rework or invoke the female icons to confront the repression of female sexuality, limiting gender roles, inequality in male and female relationships, and violence against women. While the representational strategies of the two groups of women are significantly different and the U.S. Mexicanas would not necessarily call themselves feminists, Blake nonetheless illuminates a continuum of Chicana feminist thinking, showing how both groups of women expand lifestyle choices and promote the health and well-being of women of Mexican origin or descent.
