Chemical Atlas

Chemical Atlas PDF Author: Edward Livingston Youmans

Book Description
Excerpt from Chemical Atlas: Or the Chemistry of Familiar Objects Of the value and importance of some such plan of illustrating Chemistry there can be no longer a doubt. Indeed, the surprise almost universally expressed is, that something of the kind was not devised and adopted long ago. The superiority of the eye over all other senses, as a means of edu cation, is undeniable. The beginning of the intellectual progress of the human race consisted in the invention of letters and words as visible symbols of sound and thought and to teach those symbols remains still the starting point of education. So also with music it rose to the dignity of a regular art only when musical notes were invented. By which it became possible to express harmonies of sound to the eye. The symbolism in both cases is perfectly arbitrary nevertheless, when once acquired, it becomes an instrument of wonderful intellectual power. But if the mind is capable of being thus greatly aided by ocular signs, when there is no natural relation between them and the objects they represent, how much more must its power be multiplied when the symbols it employs assume the pictorial character, and become in a manner actual imitations of the things to be considered. Book Description
Excerpt from Chemistry for Young People After this general acquaintance is secured, the commoner elements are taken up, and the reader is told those more important. Facts about each which should be known, even to one who desires no ex pert knowledge of their qualities. After obtain ing such general knowledge of these elements, their qualities and their uses, the reader is led to enter a little more deeply into the greater principles that enable us to understand their action one upon an other, and to become acquainted with the Periodi cal Tables wherein the relations of all elements to one another is shown to depend upon their atomic weight. These relations include the subjects of valence, of atomic heat, and, generally, of chemical action as classified by modern chemists. To the enormous subject of organic chemistry, or the chemistry of carbon compounds, but one chapter is given; but in this are set forth such general laws and rules as enable the reader to comprehend the complexity of the subject and the methods by which chemists are able to make new compounds and to predict their qualities. After this general review of the subject, there follows a discussion of the history of chemistry and of its relation to human progress, which con tains, though in brief form, the important facts enabling young readers to know the importance of the part played by modern scientific chemistry in practical life. Then follows a set of tables which give in a complete way the essential facts in relation to all elements, thus completing those tables which in the earlier part of the book are confined to the more familiar elements.
