Toxicologic Assessment of the Army's Zinc Cadmium Sulfide Dispersion Tests

Toxicologic Assessment of the Army's Zinc Cadmium Sulfide Dispersion Tests PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309174783
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 386

Book Description
During the 1950s and 1960s, the U.S. Army conducted atmospheric dispersion tests in many American cities using fluorescent particles of zinc cadmium sulfide (ZnCdS) to develop and verify meteorological models to estimate the dispersal of aerosols. Upon learning of the tests, many citizens and some public health officials in the affected cities raised concerns about the health consequences of the tests. This book assesses the public health effects of the Army's tests, including the toxicity of ZnCdS, the toxicity of surrogate cadmium compounds, the environmental fate of ZnCdS, the extent of public exposures from the dispersion tests, and the risks of such exposures.

Chemical Heroes

Chemical Heroes PDF Author: Andrew Bickford
Publisher: Duke University Press
ISBN: 1478010304
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 205

Book Description
In Chemical Heroes Andrew Bickford analyzes the US military's attempts to design performance enhancement technologies and create pharmacological "supersoldiers" capable of withstanding extreme trauma. Bickford traces the deep history of efforts to biologically fortify and extend the health and lethal power of soldiers from the Cold War era into the twenty-first century, from early adoptions of mandatory immunizations to bio-protective gear, to the development and spread of new performance enhancing drugs during the global War on Terrorism. In his examination of government efforts to alter soldiers' bodies through new technologies, Bickford invites us to contemplate what constitutes heroism when armor becomes built in, wired in, and even edited into the molecular being of an American soldier. Lurking in the background and dark recesses of all US military enhancement research, Bickford demonstrates, is the desire to preserve US military and imperial power.

Chemical Soldiers

Book Description
They were sometimes the butt of jokes, the comical chemical corporals. Officially they were the British Special Brigade, sent to retaliate against German chemical warfare, selected, as one of their members said, almost willy-nilly. They wanted chemists, a young recruit later recalled, ...so I looked up the formula for water and told them it was H2O and I was in.
