Law and the "Sharing Economy"

Law and the Author: Derek McKee
Publisher: University of Ottawa Press
ISBN: 0776627538
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 559

Book Description
Controversy shrouds sharing economy platforms. It stems partially from the platforms’ economic impact, which is felt most acutely in certain sectors: Uber drivers compete with taxi drivers; Airbnb hosts compete with hotels. Other consequences lie elsewhere: Uber is associated with a trend toward low-paying, precarious work, whereas Airbnb is accused of exacerbating real estate speculation and raising the cost of long-term rental housing. While governments in some jurisdictions have attempted to rein in the platforms, technology has enabled such companies to bypass conventional regulatory categories, generating accusations of “unfair competition” as well as debates about the merits of existing regulatory regimes. Indeed, the platforms blur a number of familiar distinctions, including personal versus commercial activity; infrastructure versus content; contractual autonomy versus hierarchical control. These ambiguities can stymie legal regimes that rely on these distinctions as organizing principles, including those relating to labour, competition, tax, insurance, information, the prohibition of discrimination, as well as specialized sectoral regulation. This book is organized around five themes: technologies of regulation; regulating technology; the sites of regulation (local to global); regulating markets; and regulating labour. Together, the chapters offer a rich variety of insights on the regulation of the sharing economy, both in terms of the traditional areas of law they bring to bear, and the theoretical perspectives that inform their analysis. Modern Spatial Econometrics in Practice

Modern Spatial Econometrics in Practice PDF Author: Luc Anselin
Publisher: Geoda Press LLC
ISBN: 9780986342103
Category : Econometric models
Languages : en
Pages : 394

Book Description
This book is the definitive user's guide to the spatial regression functionality in the software packages GeoDa and GeoDaSpace, as well as the spreg module in the PySAL library --all developed at the GeoDa Center for Geospatial Analysis and Computation. The book provides the techniques to test for and estimate spatial effects in linear regression models, addressing both spatial dependence (spatial autoregressive models) as well as spatial heterogeneity (spatial regimes models). The book also serves as an introduction and a practical guide to spatial econometrics in that it covers the methodological principles and formal results that underlie the various estimation methods, test procedures and model characteristics computed by the software. While the classical maximum likelihood estimation is included, the book's coverage emphasizes modern techniques based on the principle of generalized method of moments (GMM).

The Morning After

The Morning After PDF Author: Chantal Hebert
Publisher: Vintage Canada
ISBN: 0345807634
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 322

Book Description
A #1 national bestseller, winner of the QWF Mavis Gallant Prize for Non-Fiction, and finalist for the BC National Award for Canadian Non-Fiction and the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing, The Morning After is a sly, insightful and wonderfully original book from one of Canada's most popular political analysts, Chantal Hébert, and one of Quebec's top political broadcasters, Jean Lapierre. Only the most fearless of political journalists would dare to open the old wounds of the 1995 Quebec referendum, a still-murky episode in Canadian history that continues to defy our understanding. The referendum brought one of the world's most successful democracies to the brink of the unknown, and yet Quebecers' attitudes toward sovereignty continue to baffle the country's political class. Interviewing seventeen key political leaders from the duelling referendum camps, Hébert and Lapierre begin with a simple premise: asking what were these political leaders' plans if the vote had gone the other way. Even two decades later, their answers may shock you. And in asking an unexpected question, these veteran political observers cleverly expose the fractures, tensions and fears that continue to shape Canada today.

ARFID Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder PDF Author: Rachel Bryant-Waugh
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429662750
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 150

Book Description
ARFID Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder: A Guide for Parents and Carers is an accessible summary of a relatively recent diagnostic term. People with ARFID may show little interest in eating, eat only a very limited range of foods or may be terrified something might happen to them if they eat, such as choking or being sick. Because it has been poorly recognised and poorly understood it can be difficult to access appropriate help and difficult to know how best to manage at home. This book covers common questions encountered by parents or carers whose child has been given a diagnosis of ARFID or who have concerns about their child. Written in simple, accessible language and illustrated with examples throughout, this book answers common questions using the most up-to-date clinical knowledge and research. Primarily written for parents and carers of young people, ARFID Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder includes a wealth of practical tips and suggested strategies to equip parents and carers with the means to take positive steps towards dealing with the problems ARFID presents. It will also be relevant for family members, partners or carers of older individuals, as well as professionals seeking a useful text, which captures the full range of ARFID presentations and sets out positive management advice.
