Book Description
I present asymmetries between the production of charm particles and anti-particles from Fermilab experiments, E687, E769 and E791. The results are shown as a function of x{sub F} and p{sub t}2 for D{sup {+-}} and D{sub s}{sup {+-}} mesons and for pion, kaon and photon beams and compared against current models. Results are also shown for a recent analysis of correlations between production of charm mesons and an associated pion. 14 refs., 5 figs., 3 tabs.

Charm Production Physics from Fermilab Fixed-target Experiments

Charm Production Physics from Fermilab Fixed-target Experiments PDF Author:

Pages : 7

Book Description
Recent analyses of charm quark production mechanisms from Fermilab fixed-target experiments are summarized. Measurements of single inclusive differential cross sections for hadroproduced and photoproduced D mesons are compared to next-to-leading order QCD calculations. New data from hadroproduction and previous photoproduction measurements of charm meson pair correlations are compared to NLO calculations and also to parton shower Monte Carlo models. Nonperturbative effects, such as intrinsic k{sub t} and fragmentation, are seen to play an important role in most of these comparisons. Results on charm production asymmetries in both hadroproduction and photoproduction are summarized.

Book Description
Fermilab experiment E791 collected a large sample of charm events to study several aspects of charm physics. Many topics on production and decay of charm particles can be covered with this data set. This talk will concentrate on the production asymmetry of charm mesons.

Current Issues in Open Charm Hadroproduction and New Preliminary Results from Fermilab E769 PDF Author:

Book Description
At the collision energies achieved in modern fixed target experiments, charm quarks are predominantly produced from gluon-gluon collisions where one gluon originates from each of the initial state hadrons. The production cross section thus depends on the combination of the gluon distributions of the colliding hadrons and the partonic cross section. Here, the authors review the experimental data on total charm cross section, fragmentation into charm species, dependence of the charm cross section on beam flavor, atomic mass, and transverse momentum, charm pair correlations, and leading particle asymmetry. Included are new preliminary results from Fermilab experiment E769.

Study of the Asymmetric Photoproduction of Charmed Mesons Using Data from the FOCUS Experiment

Study of the Asymmetric Photoproduction of Charmed Mesons Using Data from the FOCUS Experiment PDF Author:

Book Description
Using data from the fixed target charm-photoproduction experiment, Fermilab FOCUS/E831, they studied the asymmetric production of the mesons: D°, D y D{sub s}+. Even when the asymmetry in the production of charm particles, defined as the ratio between particles and antiparticles, at next leading order in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is almost zero, in data we observe asymmetries probably associate dto the fragmentation processes. Since these are the less understood phenomena in QCD, the results in the present work could be of great importance to understand them. We found asymmetries in the production of the mesons D+ and D° (statistic significant), for the D{sub s}+ we only observed an asymmetry not conclusive. We also report a study of the production asymmetries vs. the kinematic variables: p{sub T}2 (square transversal momentum of the particles), p{sub L} or p{sub Z} (longitudinal momentum), x{sub F} (Feynman x) and E{sub {gamma}} (photon beam energy).

Book Description
Experiment 789 is a fixed-target experiment at Fermilab designed to study low-multiplicity decays of charm and beauty. During the 1991 run. E789 collected ≈ 109 events using an 800 GeV proton beam incident upon gold and beryllium targets. Analyses of these data include searches for b → J/[psi]+[Chi] decays and [Alpha]- dependence measurements of neutral D meson production. Preliminary results from the 1991 run are presented in this paper.

Hadron Physics 98, Topics On The Structure And Interaction Of Hadronic Systems

Hadron Physics 98, Topics On The Structure And Interaction Of Hadronic Systems PDF Author: Sidney Dos Santos Avancini

Book Description
The study of QCD in the confinement regime poses some of the most difficult problems of fundamental physics at present. The mechanism of confinement itself is not described formally, and it is hard to investigate the properties of the fundamental theory in the determination of the structures and interactions of hadronic systems. The strong coupling and the extreme non-linearity of the theory severely limit the applicability and the extension and generalization of models and methods. The area of particle/nuclear physics called Hadron Physics deals with the phenomena determined by the confinement regime of QCD.The International Workshop on Hadron Physics 98 aimed to provide a framework for the comparative evaluation of different approaches to the difficult problems of QCD, and gathered together experts who have been leading developments in hadronic physics in recent years. As a central feature of the workshop program, there were four sets of lectures: (1) “An Introduction to Effective Field Theory” (J F Donoghue); (2) “Non-perturbative QCD” (A Di Giacomo); (3) “Diffraction: Past, Present and Future” (E Predazzi); “QCD at High Temperature and Density” (T Hatsuda). These courses provided a pedagogical and updated account of the recent developments that gave support to the discussion of frontier research problems. The lecturers did very useful work in the review and description of important lines of research. The lectures are reproduced in this book, together with invited talks and contributed papers dealing with specific research problems, for the use and appreciation of a wider audience.

Book Description
We present preliminary results on various aspects of charm baryon studies at the 1996-1997 fixed target experiment of Fermilab studying charm produced from incident?−, proton, and? beams at 600 GeV. First results include the comparison of hadroproduction asymmetries for?{sub c}+ production from the 3 beams as well xF distributions and the first observation of the Cabbibo-suppressed decay?{sub c}+ → pK−?+. The relative branching fraction of the Cabbibo-suppressed mode to the 3-body Cabbibo-favored modes is also presented.
