Properties of Dijets in Pp, PPb and PbPb Collisions

Properties of Dijets in Pp, PPb and PbPb Collisions PDF Author: Doga Can Gulhan

Book Description
Two dijet measurements, one using 35 pb-1 pPb data at [square root]sNN- 5.02 TeV, and another with 166 [mu]b-1 PbPb and 5.3 pb-1 pp data at [square root]sNN = 2.76 TeV collected with CMS detector at the LHC, are presented. In pPb collisions, the dijet PT ratios, azimuthal angle differences and pseudorapidity distributions are measured and compared to PYTHIA and PYTHIA+HIJING simulations as well as NLO QCD predictions for the latter observable. No significant signs of final state interactions, such as a decrease in the mean dijet PT ratios or a broadening in the correlation of the dijets in azimuthal angle, with increasing forward activity, are observed. The dijet pseudorapidity distributions are also measured, and are sensitive to nuclear PDFs for x values of 0.001 - 0.5. Selections on event activity are found to yield unexpected centrality biases on dijet pseudorapidity distributions, which aided the interpretation of similar biases seen in inclusive jet measurements by ATLAS. In PbPb collisions, a detailed scan of charged particle distributions in correlation with the dijet system is carried out. The PT projection of charged particles on the dijet axis is measured at different distances of [delta] = [mathematical formula ...] 2 with respect to the leading and subleading jet axes. In this way, the spectra and angular distribution of the additional particles, which recover the overall event balance in dijet events with enhanced PT asymmetry in PbPb compared to pp collisions, are obtained up to [delta] = 1.8 in steps of 0.2. A significant excess of low PT particles associated with a subleading jet at large [delta] values is observed, and this excess is shown to get larger for dijet events with PT asymmetry. The scan is carried out for variety of anti-kT R parameters, which provides a way of varying jet width and fragmentation. Medium response to jet quenching at wide angles for jets with different fragmentation is studied. Only an insignificant increase of the magnitude of low PT particle excess at large angles, but a significant increase in the modification of the balance distribution close to the jet axes is observed by increasing R.

Study of Parton Energy Loss in Heavy Ion Collisions Using Charged Particle Spectra Measured with CMS

Study of Parton Energy Loss in Heavy Ion Collisions Using Charged Particle Spectra Measured with CMS PDF Author: Austin A. Baty

Book Description
The phenomenology of the strong nuclear force is still not well understood at low momentum transfers and requires experimental input to constrain. Collisions of heavy ions at the Large Hadron Collider provide a unique opportunity to explore this kinematic region because they create a novel form of matter: the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Using the CMS detector, spectra of charged particles originating from protonproton (pp), proton-lead (pPb), and lead-lead (PbPb) collisions at a center of mass energy per nucleon pair ( [square root of SNN) of 5.02 TeV are examined as a function of transverse momentum and centrality. Nuclear modification factors and fragmentation functions are constructed from these spectra. By comparing to pp collision reference spectra, a puzzle concerning previous measurements in pPb collisions is clarified. A strong suppression of particle production observed in PbPb collisions is also quantified. Finally, collisions of xenon nuclei are also studied to constrain the path length dependence of parton energy loss. The strength of energy loss is found to increase with both [square root of SNN and the average path length through the QGP. Comparisons to theoretical models and previous measurements indicate that the path length dependence is between linear and quadratic, as expected from a combination of collisional and radiative energy loss mechanisms.

Book Description
An analysis of dijet events in PbPb and pp collisions is performed to explore the properties of energy loss by partons traveling in a quark-gluon plasma. Data are collected at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV at the LHC. The distribution of transverse momentum (pT) surrounding dijet systems is measured by selecting charged particles in different ranges of pT and at different angular cones of pseudorapidity and azimuth. The measurement is performed as a function of centrality of the PbPb collisions, the pT asymmetry of the jets in the dijet pair, and the distance parameter R used in the anti-kT jet clustering algorithm. In events with unbalanced dijets, PbPb collisions show an enhanced multiplicity in the hemisphere of the subleading jet, with the pT imbalance compensated by an excess of low-pT particles at large angles from the jet axes.

Charged Particle Transverse Momentum Spectra in Pp Collisions at Sqrt(s)

Charged Particle Transverse Momentum Spectra in Pp Collisions at Sqrt(s) PDF Author:

Pages : 36

Book Description
The charged particle transverse momentum (pT) spectra are presented for pp collisions at sqrt(s)=0.9 and 7 TeV. The data samples were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to integrated luminosities of 231 inverse microbarns and 2.96 inverse picobarns, respectively. Calorimeter-based high-transverse-energy triggers are employed to enhance the statistical reach of the high-pT measurements. The results are compared with both leading-order QCD and with an empirical scaling of measurements at different collision energies using the scaling variable xT = 2 pT/sqrt(s) over the pT range up to 200 GeV/c. Using a combination of xT scaling and direct interpolation at fixed pT, a reference transverse momentum spectrum at sqrt(s)=2.76 TeV is constructed, which can be used for studying high-pT particle suppression in the dense QCD medium produced in heavy-ion collisions at that centre-of-mass energy.

Book Description
The per-event yield of the highest transverse momentum charged particle and charged-particle jet, integrated above a given pminT threshold starting at pminT=0.8 and 1 GeV, respectively, is studied in pp collisions at s√=8 TeV. Furthermore, the particles and the jets are measured in the pseudorapidity ranges.
