Nonlinear Optical Effects in Organic Polymers

Nonlinear Optical Effects in Organic Polymers PDF Author: J. Messier
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400922957
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 393

Book Description
Photonics, the counterpart of electronics, involves the usage of Photons instead of electrons to process information and perform various switching operations. Photonics is projected to be the technology of the future because of the gain in speed, processing and interconnectivity of network. Nonlinear optical processes will play the key role in photonics Where they can be used for frequency conversion, optical switching and modulation. Organic molecules and polymers have emerged as a new class of highly promising nonlinear optical materials Which has captured the attention of scientists world wide. The organic systems offer the advantage of large nonresonant nonlinearities derived from the 1T electrons contribution, femtosecond response time and the flexibility to modify their molecular structures. In addition, organic polymers can easily be fabricated in various device structures compatible with the fiber-optics communication system. The area of nonlinear optics of organic molecules and polymers offers exciting opportunities for both fundamental research and technologic development. It is truly an interdisciplinary area. This proceeding is the outcome of the first NATO Advanced Research WOrkshop in this highly important area. The objective of the workshop was to provide a forum for scientists of varying background from both universities and industries to come together and interface their expertize. The scope of the workshop was multidisciplinary with active participations from Chemists, physicists, engineers and materials scientists from many countries.

Nonlinear Optical Polymers: Waveguide Devices Based on Second Order Effects

Nonlinear Optical Polymers: Waveguide Devices Based on Second Order Effects PDF Author: Winfred H. G. Horsthuis
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 4

Book Description
In the past few years, organic materials have gained much interest for application in nonlinear optical devices. The initial sepsis towards these new materials has decreased, since interesting results have been obtained using these materials. The advantages of such materials, expected by early workers in the field, have partially been proven. High electro-optic coefficients have been reported, and reasonably well performing integrated optic devices have been realized. Some other items, such as long term stability, mode matching and low cost production, still need further investigations and development. Nonlinear optic organic materials can be divided in several classes: organic (single) crystals, Langmuir-Blodgett films and several polymeric systems (solid-solutions, main-chain polymers, sidechain polymers). Until now, side-chain polymers appear to be the most promising class, mainly because of their attractive processing characteristics and the flexibility in molecular design.

Optical Characterization and Patterning of Nonlinear Optical Polymers with Photocrosslinking Groups

Optical Characterization and Patterning of Nonlinear Optical Polymers with Photocrosslinking Groups PDF Author: P. Miller

Book Description
Two photosensitive polymers have been characterized for their linear optical properties. The changes of absorbance and of the index of refraction due to UV radiation have been investigated. Holographic gratings were written in these photopolymers. The diffraction efficiencies of these holographic gratings were used to measure the index changes. It was demonstrated that an index pattern can be easily written in these two photopolymers by using a one step conventional photolithographic process. These photopolymers can exhibit large second order nonlinearities. It is expected that photolithographic patterning techniques investigated will play an important role in integrated optical device fabrication.

Nonlinear Optics for the Information Society

Nonlinear Optics for the Information Society PDF Author: A. Driessen
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401512671
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 179

Book Description
Nonlinear optical phenomena can be exploited in advanced devices for transport, processing, and storage of information. These are needed as the present-day approach - mainly using on electron-based technology - faces the challenges of increasing demand on bandwidth and processing speed. A key role in the development of nonlinear devices is the availability of novel materials with the required nonlinear optical properties. With such materials, scientific creativity and careful design, promising concepts have been developed resulting in the demonstration of devices. This book contains the proceedings of NOIS 2000 (Nonlinear Optics for the Information Society) Annual Meeting of the COST Action P2, held at the University of Twente, in Enschede, The Netherlands, on 26-27 October, 2000. It comprises a selection of the presentations at the meeting, reporting state-of-the-art research and developments in the field of applications of nonlinear phenomena in information technology.

Nonlinear Optical and Electroactive Polymers

Nonlinear Optical and Electroactive Polymers PDF Author: Paras N. Prasad
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461309530
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 445

Book Description
This treatise is a compendium of papers based on invited talks presented at the American Chemical Society Symposium on Electroactive Polymers which covered nonlinear optical polymers and conducting polymers, the common denominator being the correlated pi-electron structures. The improved understanding of the consequences of pi-electron delocalization upon nonlinear optical properties and charge carrier dynamics has laid the foundation for the rapid development and application of the electroresponse of conjugated polymers. As a result, the area of electroactive and nonlinear optical polymers is emerging as a frontier of sCience and technology. It is a multidisciplinary field that is bringing together scientists and engineers of varied background to interface their expertise. The recent explosion of interest in this area stems from the prospect of utilizing nonlinear optical effects for optical switching and logic operations in optical computing, optical signal processing, optical sensing and optical fiber communications. Polymers and organic are rapidly becoming one of the major material classes for nonlinear optical applications along with multiple quantum wells, ferroelectrics and other oxides, and direct band-gap semiconductors. The reasons for this lie in the unique molecular structures of polymers and organics and the ability to molecularly engineer the architecture of these structures through chemical synthesis.

Advanced Materials for Integrated Optical Waveguides

Advanced Materials for Integrated Optical Waveguides PDF Author: Xingcun Colin Tong Ph.D
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3319015508
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 574

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive introduction to integrated optical waveguides for information technology and data communications. Integrated coverage ranges from advanced materials, fabrication, and characterization techniques to guidelines for design and simulation. A concluding chapter offers perspectives on likely future trends and challenges. The dramatic scaling down of feature sizes has driven exponential improvements in semiconductor productivity and performance in the past several decades. However, with the potential of gigascale integration, size reduction is approaching a physical limitation due to the negative impact on resistance and inductance of metal interconnects with current copper-trace based technology. Integrated optics provides a potentially lower-cost, higher performance alternative to electronics in optical communication systems. Optical interconnects, in which light can be generated, guided, modulated, amplified, and detected, can provide greater bandwidth, lower power consumption, decreased interconnect delays, resistance to electromagnetic interference, and reduced crosstalk when integrated into standard electronic circuits. Integrated waveguide optics represents a truly multidisciplinary field of science and engineering, with continued growth requiring new developments in modeling, further advances in materials science, and innovations in integration platforms. In addition, the processing and fabrication of these new devices must be optimized in conjunction with the development of accurate and precise characterization and testing methods. Students and professionals in materials science and engineering will find Advanced Materials for Integrated Optical Waveguides to be an invaluable reference for meeting these research and development goals.
