Book Description
The purpose of this research was to examine and describe attrition and analyze factors that affect attrition at the United States Naval Academy. Specifically, the research attempts to identify characteristics that may signal a student's propensity to attrite from school. The intention is to determine if there are common characteristics among those who attrited from the Academy and to determine what role organizational factors and Academy experiences had on attrition. The desired end state is to identify a partial list of characteristics the Company Officer may use to flag at risk Midshipmen and when appropriate, intervene to reduce attrition. The results of the research indicate those who fail one or more physical readiness tests, females, and minorities have a greater probability of attriting from the Academy. This study summarizes the results, makes recommendations to the United States Naval Academy and for future research.

Predictors of Plebe Summer Attrition at the United States Naval Academy

Predictors of Plebe Summer Attrition at the United States Naval Academy PDF Author: Michael P. Hollenbach
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781423501787
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 87

Book Description
This thesis analyzes the relationship between entry-level variables available to the Office of Admissions and plebe summer attrition at the United States Naval Academy (USNA). The study used independent samples t-tests and linear regression analysis to analyze the effects of individual variables on plebe summer attrition and also used binary logistic regression to develop an overall predictive model of plebe summer attrition. Analysis was conducted on the USNA classes that completed plebe summer from 1995-2002 (N = 9,554). The results of this study indicate the highest plebe summer attrition is attributed to majority females, females in general and midshipmen who exceed the limits of the height/weight table and are not recruited athletes. The lowest plebe summer attrition rates are found among children of service academy graduates, recruited varsity athletes, summer seminar attendees, minority males and older midshipmen. This study summarizes the results and also offers recommendations to the Naval Academy and for future research.

The Changing World Of The American Military

The Changing World Of The American Military PDF Author: Franklin D Margiotta
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000315312
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 396

Book Description
As the U.S. military moves into an uncertain future dominated by rapid change, traditional modes of thought will no longer suffice. Contributors to this volume focus on some of the major factors that will shape the American military in the 1980s: a complex, interdependent international arena, a changing domestic political context, broad societal forces and trends, the imperatives of advanced technology, conflicting bureaucratic and management orientations, and the emergence of new elites. The articles collected here present the diverse views of civilian scholars, of all services and ranks of the military, and of Department of Defense and congressional civilians; they feature the results of surveys conducted at the three service academies and among other civilian and military populations that number in the tens of thousands. The focus moves from a historical and current assessment of military professionalism to potential influences in the changing international and domestic environments. A major section is devoted to important military manpower issues. Analyses of organizational dynamics and change address the implications of advanced technology, bureaucratization, and centralization of control. The book concludes with contrasting views of the future demands on military professionalism and with a final summary that suggests future research avenues.

The Utility of Personality Measures in the Admissions Process at the United States Naval Academy

Book Description
This study examined the ability of three personality measures to predict midshipmen attrition at the United States Naval Academy. More specifically, the study examined the ability of the Myers Briggs Type Indicator and the Personal History Questionnaire to replace the Career Interest Score of the Strong Interest Inventory in the Naval Academy admissions formula and to better predict overall, voluntary, academic, and performance/conduct attrition. The data used were from the Naval Academy classes of 1995 to 2000. Logistic regression analysis was done using just the classes of 1995-1999. The class of 2000 was used in an out of sample prediction to test the validity of the study's attrition model. Results showed that the Career Interest Score is unable to predict attrition. Additionally, the addition of the MBTI and PHQ improved the predictive ability of the admissions formula for two of the four attrition variables modeled. The model was most effective in predicting voluntary attrition. Recommendations are made regarding the United States Naval Academy admissions policy and for future research in the subject area.
