Book Description
Excerpt from Wives and Daughters, Vol. 2: An Every-Day Story Old Silas lay in a sort of closet, opening out of the family-living room. The small window that gave it light looked right on to the moor, as it was called and by day the check curtain was drawn aside so that he might watch the progress of the labour. Every thing about the old man was clean, of course; and, with Death, the leveller, so close at hand, it was the labourer who made the first advances, and put out his horny hand to the squire. The Old Wives Tale (Classic Reprint)

The Old Wives Tale (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Arnold Bennett

Pages : 578

Book Description
Excerpt from The Old Wives Tale In the autumn of 1903 I used to dine frequently in a restaurant in the Rue de Clichy, Paris. Here were, among others, two waitresses that attracted my attention. One was a beautiful, pale young girl, to whom I never spoke, for she was employed far away from the table which I affected. The other, a stout, middle-aged managing Breton woman, had sole command over my table and me, and gradually she began to assume such a maternal tone towards me that I saw I should be compelled to leave that restaurant. If I was absent for a couple of nights running she would reproach me sharply: "What! you are unfaithful to me?" Once, when I complained about some French beans, she informed me roundly that French beans were a subject which I did not understand. I then decided to be eternally unfaithful to her, and I abandoned the restaurant. A few nights before the final parting an old woman came into the restaurant to dine. She was fat, shapeless, ugly, and grotesque. She had a ridiculous voice, and ridiculous gestures. It was easy to see that she lived alone, and that in the long lapse of years she had developed the kind of peculiarity which induces guffaws among the thoughtless. She was burdened with a lot of small parcels, which she kept dropping. She chose one seat; and then, not liking it, chose another; and then another. In a few moments she had the whole restaurant laughing at her. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Husbands and Wives (Classic Reprint)

Husbands and Wives (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Arthur Belleville McCoid
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780243260119
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 278

Book Description
Excerpt from Husbands and Wives The inspiration for this book is derived from my long experience in the courts. This has brought me into direct contact with the old, dusty, tangled web of the marriage relation. To the disinterested observer, it is evident that the married pair themselves are responsible for al most every case of divorce. From my point of vantage, I saw what those with but one experi ence could not see, how the obstacles to happi ness in marriage might have been avoided, and I felt that could I make them see it, the in creasingly difficult problem of marriage and divorce would, in great part, be solved. So, with the highest ideal for the future in crease of happiness for the human race, I began this story of Husbands and Wives. As the work progressed, I found myself constantly in danger of losing this high ideal. But, as science is built upon the truth as gained from actual experience, and as that is the only safe founda tion upon which to build, I have struggled to present, not merely the facts, but the spirit of what my experience has brought to me.
