"Widespread use of resource constrained wireless ad hoc networks requires careful management of the network resources in order to maximize the utilization. In cognitive wireless networks, resources such as spectrum, energy, communication links/paths, time, space, modulation scheme, have to be managed to maintain quality of service (QoS). Therefore in the first paper, a distributed dynamic channel allocation scheme is proposed for multi-channel wireless ad hoc networks with single-radio nodes. The proposed learning scheme adapts the probabilities of selecting each channel as a function of the error in the performance index at each step. Due to frequent changes in topology and flow traffic over time, wireless ad hoc networks require a dynamic routing protocol that adapts to the changes of the network while allocating network resources. In the second paper, approximate dynamic programming (ADP) techniques are utilized to find dynamic routes, while solving discrete-time Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation forward-in-time for route cost. The third paper extends the dynamic routing to multi-channel multi-interface networks which are affected by channel uncertainties and fading channels. By the addition of optimization techniques through load balancing over multiple paths and multiple wireless channels, utilization of wireless channels throughout the network is enhanced. Next in the fourth paper, a decentralized game theoretic approach for resource allocation of the primary and secondary users in a cognitive radio networks is proposed. The priorities of the networks are incorporated in the utility and potential functions which are in turn used for resource allocation. Mobile ad hoc networks, also known as multihop or mesh networks, are gaining more and more attention these days. Originally designed for military applications, the idea of spontaneous communication using direct links to immediate neighbors has rapidly spread over to the civilian sector. This book focuses on the design of large-scale wireless multihop networks supporting quality-of-service. Based on an in-depth analysis of state-of-the-art architectures, the novel idea of cut-through/cell-switching is pointed out. Enhancements to the standard IEEE 802.11 DCF are presented as basic elements of diversified management protocols. An innovative approach to distributed dynamic channel assignment is introduced and benchmarked against one of the most powerful centralized algorithms known to date. Moreover, wireless sensor networks are identified as a new field of application for the classic Kalman filter.Finally, a new integrated R&D platform has been developed and is also part of the presentation. It consists of a simulation environment written in C++ and a software defined radio transceiver. The latter is based on an architecture employing the latest in digital signal processing: a general purpose DSP accompanied by FPGAs, dedicated digital up-/down converter ASICs, high-performance ADCs and DACs.

Wireless networks have become crucial to provide mobile users with untethered communication services. Future generation wireless network has naturally evolved as a heterogeneous one, in which different wireless technologies compliment others to provide diverse Quality of Service (QoS). On one side, societal dependence on wireless services demands the survivability as a built-in design initiative. On the other side, resource management strategies are vital to efficiently utilize limited radio resources. This dissertation contributes to research on the resource management for QoS based survivable wireless networks. The main objective is to design adaptive resource schemes that can improve wireless survivability while satisfying QoS requirements. First a multi-layer wireless survivability framework is developed to encompass new features of Third-Generation (3G) cellular systems. Within this framework, adaptive resource management algorithms are utilized as the primary strategy to achieve Radio Network Subsystem (RNS) survivability. New capacity models and capacity utilization models are designed to support the survivability analysis of algorithms for managing the heterogeneous wireless resources of 3G systems. The resource management algorithms developed include an adaptive admission control algorithm with channel switching, QoS and priority. The results show that these adaptive algorithms outperform prior schemes especially in overload situations. The RNS survivability design is further extended to the hybrid wireless context for which different design strategies are studied. A novel utility based adaptive resource management scheme is proposed for the hybrid wireless networks to meet both survivability and QoS expectations. This is shown to achieve effective load balancing and failure tolerance in high traffic overload.
