Hymns and Hymnody, Volume 2

Hymns and Hymnody, Volume 2 PDF Author: Benjamin K. Forrest
Publisher: James Clarke & Company
ISBN: 0227907221
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 358

Book Description
While worship is one of the central functions of the church (along with mission, service, education, justice, and compassion) and occupies a prime focus of our churches, a renewed sense of awareness to our theological presuppositions and cultural cues must be maintained to ensure a proper focus in worship. Hymns and Hymnody: Historical and Theological Introductions is an introductory textbook in three volumes describing the most influential hymnists, liturgists, and musical movements of the church. This academically-grounded resource evaluates both the historical and theological perspectives of the major hymnists and composers that have impacted the church over the course of twenty centuries. Volume 2 begins with the Reformation and extends to the eighteenth-century hymnists and liturgists. Each chapter contains five elements: historical background, theological perspectives communicated in their hymns/compositions, contribution to liturgy and worship, notable hymns, and bibliography. The missions of Hymns and Hymnody are to provide biographical data on influential hymn writers for students and interested laypeople, and to provide a theological analysis of what the cited composers have communicated in the theology of their hymns. It is vital for those involved in leading the worship of the church to recognize that what they communicate is in fact theology. This latter aspect is missing in accessible formats for the current literature.

A Descriptive Catalogue of the Music Collection at Burghley House, Stamford

A Descriptive Catalogue of the Music Collection at Burghley House, Stamford PDF Author: Gerald Gifford
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351786121
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 394

Book Description
This title was first published in 2002: Burghley House, Stamford, was built between 1555 and 1587 for William Cecil, Lord Burghley, the Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I. The library there contains an extensive collection of manuscript and printed music dating from about 1650 to 1850, substantially formed during the latter part of the 18th century by the Ninth Earl of Exeter. The collection is given particular significance by the inclusion of several rare and in some cases apparently unique volumes. This catalogue examines the Burghley House music collection in the light of contemporary documentary evidence. The opening section describes the people who added to the collection and their musical enthusiasms. This approach brings the collection to life and also enables us to appreciate emergent trends in British music history of the period. With each entry fully described and the printed music referenced to RISM or CPM, this catalogue should form a valuable reference source for all scholars of British music from the 17th to the 19th century.

Burning in Blueness The Dark-Light of a Countertenor

Burning in Blueness The Dark-Light of a Countertenor PDF Author: Maxine Handy
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 1446670317
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 275

Book Description
Burning in Blueness is a haunting memoir of the world's foremost countertenor James Bowman. The author lyrically portrays and interprets her affinity with the great man and his music. The text is in three parts covering a total of three decades, to include James' work with David Munrow, Britten and Pears, and as the voice of Robert King's five-year Purcell series. The account is not chronological, but traces the creative contact between the author's literary interests and James Bowman's musical genius. The book makes a valuable contribution to musical history, as the famous and intensely private countertenor himself, has always resisted the suggestion of a conventional biography. Burning in Blueness is part of James' legacy as he approaches his 70th birthday in 2011.
