The trr combines information derived from special field studies with that obtained from assembling and updating the best data already available. Area and volume statistics were adjusted to January 1, 1953; timber cut and utilization figures are for the calendar year 1952. The task was made possible through excellent cooperation between federal and state agencies and private industries. This report is for managers of forest land, forest industry personnel, and all others interested in the forests of the Central States. The statistics presented here are taken from the tre data except for those that pertain to Iowa. Iowa figures are based on a more intensive survey completed after data were assembled for the trr. Regular forest surveys of the other five Central States were completed before national statistics were assembled. In some cases, tables included in this report are presented in more detail than will be possible in the thb publication. The area and volume figures shown by ownerships may differ slightly from figures published by the agencies concerned. This is because of differences in definitions, specifications, log rules, and cruising standards. Unless indicated otherwise, the board-foot volumes are expressed in net volume log scale International inch rule; cubic foot volumes show net log volume excluding bark. Excerpt from Forest Resources of Missouri: Central States Forest Experiment Station, Columbus, Ohio The Forest Survey is conducted in the various forest regions by the forest experiment stations of the Forest Ser vice. In Missouri, the project is directed by the Central States Forest Experiment Station with headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. For Survey purposes, the State has been divided into five principal regions based on character of forest, topography, and other factors that influence tree growth. Survey releases have been published for each of the regions (forest Survey Releases 1 to 5 inclusive) presenting the more significant statistics on forest area and timber vol ume. This release summarizes these data for the State as a whole. In some instances figures for individual forest types and Species may not exactly equal the totals obtained by adding the figures in the five regional releases. This is due to the fact that minor types and Species were grouped differently in several of the regional releases and the State summary. Later an analytical report fur the State will be published, which will interpret forest area, timber volume, granth, and drain statistics in the light of existing and anticipated economic conditions. This interpretation will focus attention on the principal forest problems and will suggest possible solutions. The rolling nature of the land, along with heavy rainfall and a long winter period during which the land is left without the protection of growing vegetation, makes the soils especially susceptible to erosion and loss of fertility. Since settlement began, it has been a com mon practice to crop a field for several years until yields began to drop, abandon it, and clear new land. A large share of the land in this region has gone through at least one cycle of clearing, abandonment, and reversion to forests. There probably is very little land outside of the swales and swampy river bottoms which at some time or another in the past has not been cropped. Forest Service planned and conducted a new inventory of Kentucky forests. The field work was completed in 1964. The mcsweeney-mcnary Forest Research Act of 1928 authorizes the Forest Service to complete a statewide forest inventory of Kentucky at approximate 10 year intervals. This is part of the nationwide program of maintaining a current account of our timber resources. The State of Kentucky appropriated for the current survey. This contribution, supplementing the Federal funds available for a regular survey, made it possible to intensify the inventory. As a result, we can provide the kind of detailed information needed for making long-range plans to meet future demands and in addition help local communities and forest-based industries make more efficient use of the forest resource. Clarence D. Chase, Leader of the Survey Project at the Lake States Forest Experiment Station, directed the inventory. Excerpt from A Look at Black Walnut Timber Resources and Industries As colonists moved westward from the Seaboard States into the Central States, they found black walnut even more plentiful. Trees were reported up to 6 feet in diameter, and 150 feet tall. The wood was so clear and easy to split, and so durable, that it was used extensively for fence rails. When Abe Lincoln was splitting fence rails, he probably split up many a walnut tree. The wood was used for building cabins, and later for trim in fine homes. Walnut has always been the preferred wood for gunstocks. Pennsylvania gunsmiths used it for the long rifles that became famous in the wars with the Indians and the British. During the Civil War, and later during World War I and World War II, the demand for walnut for gunstocks was so great that it put a heavy drain on the resource of this timber. The major use for black walnut today, both at home and abroad, is in furniture manufacture. One main mark of walnut's distinction is that many other fine woods are stained to make them look like walnut. Walnut wood ranging from rich dark browns to pleasing lighter browns can be finished without stain. Under a good finish, the grain gives the wood those ineffable highlights, chang ing with the light and the angle of view, that few other woods possess. American black walnut now is in strong demand in both American and foreign markets. The sharply expanding foreign market and the steady domestic market have raised questions as to the adequacy of the present and future supplies of black walnut timber. As a result, numerous measures to increase or sustain the supply have been taken. These include the establishment of a quota on the export of walnut logs and bolts, requests that the domestic veneer industry cut thinner veneers, and expanded re search and extension work to encourage walnut culture. Excerpt from Wisconsin's 1968 Timber Resource: A Perspective The third Wisconsin Forest Survey was part of the continuing program authorized by Congress in the mcsweeney-mcnary Forest Research Act of 1928 to maintain a current inventory of the Nation's timber supply. The survey was organized and conducted jointly by the North Central Forest Experiment Station and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Each agency completed the aerial photo interpretation and field work for approximately half of the State. All work was done under the broad guidelines of the Department of Natural Resources Forest Advisory Council, a group composed of many public and private foresters within the State. The Eastern Region of the usda Forest Service provided timber resource data for the two National Forests in Wisconsin.
