The boundary between economics and sociology is presently being redefined--but how, why, and by whom? Richard Swedberg answers these questions in this thought-provoking book of conversations with well-known economists and sociologists. Among the economists interviewed are Gary Becker, Amartya Sen, Kenneth Arrow, and Albert O. Hirschman; the sociologists include Daniel Bell, Harrison White, James Coleman, and Mark Granovetter. The picture that emerges is that economists and sociologists have paid little attention to each other during most of the twentieth century: social problems have been analyzed as if they had no economic dimension and economic problems as if they had no social dimension. Today, however, there is a dialogue between the two fields, as economists take on social topics and as sociologists become interested in rational choice and "new economic sociology." The interviewees describe how they came to challenge the present separation between economics and sociology, what they think of the various proposals to integrate the fields, and how they envision the future. The author summarizes the results of the conversations in the final chapter. The individual interviews also serve as superb introductions to the work of these scholars.

Over 5 decades of economic and technical assistance to the countries of Africa and the Middle East have failed to improve the life prospects for over 1.4 billion people who remain vulnerable. Billions of dollars have been spent on such assistance and yet little progress has been made. Persistent hunger and hopelessness threaten more than individuals and families. These conditions foster political alienation that can easily metastasize into hostility and aggression. Recent uprisings in the Middle East are emblematic of this problem. Vulnerable people give rise to vulnerable states. This book challenges the dominant catechism of development assistance by arguing that the focus on economic growth (and fighting poverty) has failed to bring about the promised "convergence." Poor people and poor countries have clearly not closed the gap on the rich industrialized world. Pursuing convergence has been a failure. Here we argue that development assistance must be reconstituted to focus on creating economic coherence. People are vulnerable because the economies in which they are embedded do not cohere. The absence of economic coherence means that economic processes do not work as they must if individual initiative is to result in improved livelihoods. Weak and vulnerable states must be strengthened so that they can become partners in the process of creating economic coherence. When economies do not cohere, countries become breeding grounds for localized civil conflicts that often spill across national borders.

The process involves the development of software that computers can use to do tasks that were previously performed by people requiring intelligence. The capabilities of artificial intelligence systems include the ability to learn, observe, solve problems, grasp language, and reason rationally. Artificial intelligence may be used in a wide variety of modern applications, ranging from personal assistants to autonomous vehicles. There is a continuous progression taking place in the area of artificial intelligence (AI). In spite of this, artificial intelligence is occasionally depicted in science fiction as being as lifelike as is physically possible in robot form. Nevertheless, robotics is a discipline of computer science that focuses on the study of robots like these. Robots, which are programmable machines, are often capable of carrying out a series of activities either entirely or partly on their own. One must possess all three of the following characteristics in order to be classified as a robot Through the use of their sensors and actuators, robots interact with the environment that they are in Automatons may be programmed by you. The vast majority of robots are capable of functioning on little or no supervision from humans. Due to the fact that certain robots do not have the capability to function alone, the word "usually" is used to characterize robots. For example, even if they are only controlled by humans, telerobots are still regarded to be a branch of robotics for the purpose of classification. Long term, robots that are driven by artificial intelligence will link the two areas. The operation of these mechanical creatures is carried out by intelligent computer software. The majority of robots do not possess any kind of artificial intelligence. Up until quite recently, all industrial robots were restricted to doing the same set of duties simultaneously. We have previously shown that artificial intelligence is not required for jobs that are routine and repetitive. There are significant limitations placed on the capabilities of robots that lack intelligence. Algorithms that are based on artificial intelligence are often necessary in order to make it possible for robots to perform more complex tasks.
