Book Description
Excerpt from Saint Paul's Chestnut Hill, Salisbury, North Carolina: An Historical Sketch Father Murdoch came to St. Luke's as a young and spirited missionary, prepared to improve the congregation which had little money and was only slowly beginning to recover from the difficult Reconstruction Period. He surely brought new life and progress to St. Luke's. During the first five years of his ministry the congregation more than doubled. He possessed all the necessary qualities to be a zealous missionary. He was a brilliant scholar and had great interest in the classics as well as mathematics and architecture. In recognition of his schol arly abilities he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Divinity by the University of The South at Sewanee, Tennessee in 1890. He was a very capable theologian and was devoted to the historic Christian duty of expanding the Church and spreading the Gospel.
