Book Description
Louisiana's sixth largest city, Kenner, is often looked upon simply as a suburb of New Orleans and home to Louis Armstrong International Airport. An Untractable Country: The History of Kenner, Louisiana, reveals that Kenner has its own unique and dynamic history separate from that of New Orleans. This is the first book-length narrative of the three-hundred-year-long story of the people and events that transformed an area located along the Mississippi River, approximately thirteen miles upriver from the Crescent City, from a grassy Indian hunting ground to one of Louisiana's largest municipalities. From its earliest times as the colonial settlement of Cannes Brûlées, through its incarnation as the small antebellum town of Kennerville, to its rapid growth as a suburban bedroom community during the second half of the twentieth century, the story of Kenner exemplifies life in communities across the state and fills an important void in the greater mosaic of the story of Louisiana. Book jacket.

The Jews of Windsor, 1790-1990

The Jews of Windsor, 1790-1990 PDF Author: Jonathan V. Plaut
Publisher: Dundurn
ISBN: 1770702636
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 322

Book Description
Beginning with the first Jewish settler, Moses David, the important role that Windsor Jews played in the development of Ontario’s south is mirrored in this 200-year chronicle. the founding pioneer families transformed their Eastern European shtetl into a North American settlement; many individuals were involved in establishing synagogues, schools, and an organized communal structure in spite of divergent religious, political, and economic interests. Modernity and the growing influences of Zionism and Conservative/Reform Judaism challenged the traditional and leftist leanings of the community’s founders. From the outset, Jews were represented in city council, actively involved in communal organizations, and appointed to judicial posts. While its Jewish population was small, Windsor boasted Canada’s first Jewish Cabinet members, provincially and federally, in David Croll and Herb Gray. As the new millennium approached, jews faced shrinking numbers, forcing major consolidations in order to ensure their survival.

New Directions in Applied Mathematics

New Directions in Applied Mathematics PDF Author: P.J. Hilton
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461256518
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 166

Book Description
It is close enough to the end of the century to make a guess as to what the Encyclopedia Britannica article on the history of mathematics will report in 2582: "We have said that the dominating theme of the Nineteenth Century was the development and application of the theory of functions of one variable. At the beginning of the Twentieth Century, mathematicians turned optimistically to the study off unctions of several variables. But wholly unexpected difficulties were met, new phenomena were discovered, and new fields of mathematics sprung up to study and master them. As a result, except where development of methods from earlier centuries continued, there was a recoil from applications. Most of the best mathematicians of the first two-thirds of the century devoted their efforts entirely to pure mathe matics. In the last third, however, the powerful methods devised by then for higher-dimensional problems were turned onto applications, and the tools of applied mathematics were drastically changed. By the end of the century, the temporary overemphasis on pure mathematics was completely gone and the traditional interconnections between pure mathematics and applications restored. "This century also saw the first primitive beginnings of the electronic calculator, whose development in the next century led to our modern methods of handling mathematics.

From Spirituals to Symphonies

From Spirituals to Symphonies PDF Author: Helen Walker-Hill
Publisher: University of Illinois Press
ISBN: 0252074548
Category : African American women composers
Languages : en
Pages : 429

Book Description
Exploding the assumption that black women's only important musical contributions have been in folk, jazz, and pop Helen Walker-Hill's unique study provides a carefully researched examination of the history and scope of musical composition by African American women composers from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Focusing on the effect of race, gender, and class, From Spirituals to Symphonies notes the important role played by individual personalities and circumstances in shaping this underappreciated category of American art. The study also provides in-depth exploration of the backgrounds, experiences, and musical compositions of eight African American women including Margaret Bonds, Undine Smith Moore, and Julia Perry, who combined the techniques of Western art music with their own cultural traditions and individual gifts. Despite having gained national and international recognition during their lifetimes, the contributions of many of these women are today forgotten.
