Book Description
Excerpt from Centenary History of the Presbyterian Church in New South Wales I have to acknowledge my Obligations to the late Rev. Henry Macready, an honoured minister of our Church, who in his day rendered good service in various capacities. After being laid aside from active ministerial work, Mr. Macready conceived the idea of writing a History of the Church, and collected certain material for the work; but sickness and death intervened to frustrate the execution of that upon which he had set his heart. Before he died, he generously handed over to us the material he had collected and the work he had done, and these I have found of much use, especially in dealing with the earlier portion of the History. Book Description
Excerpt from The Centennial History of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church: 1803-1903 The Associate Reformed Presbyterian Synod, at its meeting in Chester, South Carolina, November both to 14th, 1898. appointed the Rev. James Royce, John T. Chalmers, D. I., and Rev. T. G. Royce. Dr. J. I. McCain and J. E. McDonald, Esq., a committee on centennial celebration. The Syntax at its meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina, the following year, adopted the report of this committee and among other things provided for the "beatification of a centennial history, to contain sketches of all congregations and pastors in connection at any time with the Synod." and appointed the Rev. O. Y. Boner, Rev. S. A. Agnew, D. D. and Rev. W. M. Hunter the editors of this volume. Vacancies on this committee have occurred from time to time. The death of Dr. Agnew and the resignation of Rev. O. Y. Bonner left only Rev. W.M. Hunter as a member of the original committee. At the Synod of 1902, at Pisgah, North Carolina, the Rev. J. C. (Galloway, D. D., was elected chairman of the committee, and at various times the following names have been added to the committee: Rev. J. V. Raird, Rev. C.E. McDonald, Rev. J. S. Mills, Rev. J. L. Young, Rev. C. S. Young, Rev. H. R. Likely, Rev. I. S. Caldwell and Rev. R. H. Grier. All of these brethren have done faithful work, but the patience and perseverance of the Rev. Dr. Galloway and the Rev. V. M. Hunter deserve special mention. They have been unwearied in their search for historical data and Munich of the completeness and historical accuracy of those sketches are due to their painstaking efforts. It is with genuine satisfaction that the volume is now offered to the public. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Centennial History of First Presbyterian Church, Hickory, N. C., 1873-1973 One hundred years ago, North Carolina was struggling to meet the demands and excesses of Reconstruction. Money was scarce, prices were high and an attitude of demoralization and greed prevailed throughout the South. Yet despite the dark clouds which hung heavy over our state and her southern sisters, the light of the Christian spirit burned steady. As the state attempted to reorganize its governmental structure, the Presbyterian Synod of North Carolina was going about the business of reviving the Lord's work. Recognizing the temper of the times the synod focused its attention upon Christian families, calling upon them to look to their children and to teach them the fear of God and obedience to lawful authority. Following up on its appeal to families, synod next turned its attention to all people, calling them to prayer and to-arise and rebuild the waste places, and urging them to the support of evangelists and missionaries. Although it was synod that was pricking the consciences of North Carolina Presbyterians, it was on the level of presbytery that the responsibility for mission and evangelization was directed. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Presbyterian Church in South Carolina, Vol. 2 In the vear 1849, the Synod of South Carolina adopted a scheme for securing a History of the Church covered by their jurisdiction. The scheme was elaborate, embracing many particulars: and it was the pleasure of Svnod to appoint the present writer their Historio grapher. The ofiice involved an amount of labor and consumption of time, in the preparation of the first volume, of whlch he did not have the least conception, although the scheme, as marked out, was not fully aecom plished. The History was to be brought down to 1850, the middle of this Century. In 1870 the first volume was issued, bringing the work down to the year 1800. The volume which is now issued, has been prepared at such intervals as could be secured in vacation, when the author was relieved from his ordinary official duties. As the whole of an ordinary generation has passed away-since the year 1850, the year tn which his appointment extended, it has been the desire of the author to bring the History down more nearly to the present time, and he had, to some extent, received the materials for doing so. But dur ing the past Summer his health began seriously to fail him, and his most judicious friends advised him to stop at the original limit of saying that it was the proper place to stop: that the History of the Church through our-late civil war, and the efforts it put forth in those days of supreme trial and since, deserve a fuller treatment than he could now give it. To this advice he has yielded, and although this did not occur until the work showed manifest allusions in several instances to a later period, he removed from the remainder of his manu script all such references, except those which could not well be erased. Some of the materials furnished from the Churches are brief. Others far more extended, which, in some instances, have been greatlv abbre viated, and in others more amply given. The author is fully conscious of the many defects of his work, and submits the result of his labors to that indulgence of his brethren which it so greatly needs. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church Under the same limitations the plan was formed about the different States. It was to give the origin of the church in each State, with as much fullness of detail as could well be secured, extending the record only to the organization of the first presbytery, closing that chapter with a rapid summary view of the present condition of our church in that part of the field. There were certain subjects belonging to 'all periods to which special chapters were reserved, to be placed at the last of the book; and if they brought out any thing further from the work of our people in any particular State, at any later period, all well; and if not, there would be no further notice taken of that portion of the church. The question of brief biographical sketches was also care fully weighed, and finally decided in the negative. To this decision an exception was made in the case of those gener ally called the fathers of the church. If a biography formed part of the very thread of the history which I was writing, just so far was it also made a part of this volume. There were placed in my hands some very interesting biographies which contained no Single item that could be used accord ing to my established programme of operations.
