The French Encounter with Africans

The French Encounter with Africans PDF Author: William B. Cohen

ISBN: 9780253003058
Category : History

Book Description
"As French and American historians of France are revisiting the history of French racism today, William B. Cohen's book is more important than ever. It has become a classic." -- Nancy L. Green In this pioneering work, William B. Cohen traces the ways in which negative attitudes toward blacks became deeply embedded in French culture. Examining the forces that shaped these views, Cohen reveals the persistent inequality of French interactions with blacks in Africa, in the slave colonies of the West Indies, and in France itself. Now a classic, The French Encounter with Africans is essential reading for anyone engaged in current discussions of European relations with non-Europeans and with issues of racism, ethnicity, identity, colonialism, and empire.

Politics of Memory

Politics of Memory PDF Author: Ana Lucia Araujo
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 113631315X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
The public memory of slavery and the Atlantic slave trade, which some years ago could be observed especially in North America, has slowly emerged into a transnational phenomenon now encompassing Europe, Africa, and Latin America, and even Asia – allowing the populations of African descent, organized groups, governments, non-governmental organizations and societies in these different regions to individually and collectively update and reconstruct the slave past. This edited volume examines the recent transnational emergence of the public memory of slavery, shedding light on the work of memory produced by groups of individuals who are descendants of slaves. The chapters in this book explore how the memory of the enslaved and slavers is shaped and displayed in the public space not only in the former slave societies but also in the regions that provided captives to the former American colonies and European metropoles. Through the analysis of exhibitions, museums, monuments, accounts, and public performances, the volume makes sense of the political stakes involved in the phenomenon of memorialization of slavery and the slave trade in the public sphere.

1848

1848 PDF Author: Charlotte Tacke
Publisher: Peter Lang Publishing
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 198

Book Description
How have the various countries of Europe addressed their 1848 revolutions over the course of the last 150 years? Contributions from France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Poland, Denmark, and Norway follow the ever-changing history of remembering and forgetting a historical event whose impulses, experiences and perceptions more than any other previous episode suggest a European character. The revolutions of 1848 present an ideal comparative case study of the cultures of memory, where the European, national, local as well as political and social expectations and memories fuse and compete with each other. This collection of essays focuses on the question of how historical consciousness functions as well as examining which factors influence it and to what degree it is subject to a country's political vacillations.

Crossroads of European Histories

Crossroads of European Histories PDF Author: R. A. Stradling
Publisher: Council of Europe
ISBN: 9287160317
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 400

Book Description
This publication contains thirty-five papers written by European historians in relation to five key periods in European history: the year of revolutions 1848, the Balkan wars of 1912-13, the search for peace in 1919, the end of the Second World War and the beginning of the Cold War in 1945, and the events of 1989-90 in central and eastern Europe. The papers are drawn from five conferences organised by the Council of Europe based on the principles of Recommendation Rec (2001) 15 on European history teaching. They consider events based on the concept of 'multiperspectivity' which seeks to facilitate an open approach to historical debate based on critical analysis of different perspectives of historical developments, often involving controversial and sensitive issues. This publication is complemented by two related titles: a teaching manual and a DVD of original documents.

1848

1848 PDF Author: Peter H. Wilson
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351963104
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 558

Book Description
Europe was swept by a wave of revolution in 1848 that had repercussions stretching well beyond the Continent. Governments fell in quick succession or conceded significant reforms, before being rolled back by conservative reaction. Though widely perceived as a failure, the revolution ended the vestiges of feudalism, broadened civil society and strengthened the state prior to the rapid industrialisation and urbanisation of the latter part of the nineteenth century. This volume brings together essays from leading specialists on the international dimension, national experiences, political mobilisation, reaction and legacy.

1848 — A European Revolution?

1848 — A European Revolution? PDF Author: A. Körner
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1403919593
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 236

Book Description
This book is among the rare contributions to the 150th anniversary of 1848 which takes a completely new, theoretically informed approach. Instead of a traditional social or political history, the authors analyse the dichotomy between the international dimension in the ideas of the revolution and the nationalisation of memories in its commemorations over the past 150 years. The book offers original research on the history of European ideas and takes part in the current debate about the relationship between history and memory.
