Book Description
Excerpt from Census of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 1905, Vol. 3: Prepared Under the Direction of the Chief of the Bureau of Statistics of Labor; Manufactures and Trade While the statistics of Trade, therefore, as presented in this volume have been comprehensively collected and carefully tabulated, and are not without value as indicating the volume of retail and wholesale trade in Massachusetts, they do-not appear to have fulfilled one of the principal purposes which it is understood prompted the securing Of them. For instance, the total value of goods made in the city of Boston for the Census year was and the total value Of goods sold in the wholesale and retail houses of Boston amounted to an aggregate for Manufactures and Trade of These figures are interesting in themselves, but it must he confessed that the presentation Of them in tabular detail gives no clue to the proportion of goods manufactured in Boston Which found its way to consumers in Massachusetts and the pro portion which was sold beyond her borders; nor is any light shed by these figures upon the extent to which goods sold, either at retail or wholesale here, were the product Of Massachusetts mills and factories, and to how great an extent it was necessary for Massachusetts merchants to import goods made in other States in order to satisfy the demands of the local consumer. Remaking Boston

Remaking Boston PDF Author: Anthony N. Penna
Publisher: University of Pittsburgh Press
ISBN: 0822977680
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 344

Book Description
Since its settlement in 1630, Boston, its harbor, and outlying regions have witnessed a monumental transformation at the hands of humans and by nature. Remaking Boston chronicles many of the events that altered the physical landscape of Boston, while also offering multidisciplinary perspectives on the environmental history of one of America's oldest and largest metropolitan areas. Situated on an isthmus, and blessed with a natural deepwater harbor and ocean access, Boston became an important early trade hub with Europe and the world. As its population and economy grew, developers extended the city's shoreline into the surrounding tidal mudflats to create more useable land. Further expansion of the city was achieved through the annexation of surrounding communities, and the burgeoning population and economy spread to outlying areas. The interconnection of city and suburb opened the floodgates to increased commerce, services and workforces, while also leaving a wake of roads, rails, bridges, buildings, deforestation, and pollution. Profiling this ever-changing environment, the contributors tackle a variety of topics, including: the glacial formation of the region; physical characteristics and composition of the land and harbor; dredging, sea walling, flattening, and landfill operations in the reshaping of the Shawmut Peninsula; the longstanding controversy over the link between landfills and shoaling in shipping channels; population movements between the city and suburbs and their environmental implications; interdependence of the city and its suburbs; preservation and reclamation of the Charles River; suburban deforestation and later reforestation as byproducts of changing land use; the planned outlay of parks and parkways; and historic climate changes and the human and biological adaptations to them.

The Triumph of Ethnic Progressivism

The Triumph of Ethnic Progressivism PDF Author: James J. CONNOLLY
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 0674029844
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 273

Book Description
Progressivism, James Connolly shows us, was a language and style of political action available to a wide range of individuals and groups. A diverse array of political and civic figures used it to present themselves as leaders of a communal response to the growing power of illicit interests and to the problems of urban-industrial life. In showing that the several reform visions that arose in Boston included not only the progressivism of the city's business leaders but also a series of ethnic progressivisms, Connolly offers a new approach to urban public life in the early twentieth century.

Urban Exodus

Urban Exodus PDF Author: Gerald Gamm
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 0674037480
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 396

Book Description
Across the country, white ethnics have fled cities for suburbs. But many have stayed in their old neighborhoods. When the busing crisis erupted in Boston in the 1970s, Catholics were in the forefront of resistance. Jews, 70,000 of whom had lived in Roxbury and Dorchester in the early 1950s, were invisible during the crisis. They were silent because they departed the city more quickly and more thoroughly than Boston's Catholics. Only scattered Jews remained in Dorchester and Roxbury by the mid-1970s. In telling the story of why the Jews left and the Catholics stayed, Gerald Gamm places neighborhood institutions--churches, synagogues, community centers, schools--at its center. He challenges the long-held assumption that bankers and real estate agents were responsible for the rapid Jewish exodus. Rather, according to Gamm, basic institutional rules explain the strength of Catholic attachments to neighborhood and the weakness of Jewish attachments. Because they are rooted, territorially defined, and hierarchical, parishes have frustrated the urban exodus of Catholic families. And because their survival was predicated on their portability and autonomy, Jewish institutions exacerbated the Jewish exodus. Gamm shows that the dramatic transformation of urban neighborhoods began not in the 1950s or 1960s, but in the 1920s. Not since Anthony Lukas's Common Ground has there been a book that so brilliantly explores not just Boston's dilemma but the roots of the American urban crisis.
