Growing Populations, Changing Landscapes

Growing Populations, Changing Landscapes PDF Author: National Academy of Sciences
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309170729
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 323

Book Description
As the world's population exceeds an incredible 6 billion people, governmentsâ€"and scientistsâ€"everywhere are concerned about the prospects for sustainable development. The science academies of the three most populous countries have joined forces in an unprecedented effort to understand the linkage between population growth and land-use change, and its implications for the future. By examining six sites ranging from agricultural to intensely urban to areas in transition, the multinational study panel asks how population growth and consumption directly cause land-use change, and explore the general nature of the forces driving the transformations. Growing Populations, Changing Landscapes explains how disparate government policies with unintended consequences and globalization effects that link local land-use changes to consumption patterns and labor policies in distant countries can be far more influential than simple numerical population increases. Recognizing the importance of these linkages can be a significant step toward more effective environmental management.

Valour Unlimited : Haryana and the Indian Armed Forces (1914-2000)

Valour Unlimited : Haryana and the Indian Armed Forces (1914-2000) PDF Author: ATUL YADAV
Publisher: K.K. Publications
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
Warfare being an integral component of human civilization, nations are generally defined by the role played by their Armed Forces in shaping history. The story of the Army has neither a beginning nor an end; one has to, therefore, choose a point in time to start it. This story begins in 1914. The history of soldiers from Haryana, who have served the Indian Armed Forces through the last century, is a gripping account replete with innumerable examples of bravery, self-sacrifice and love for the country. The 'ordinary' men from this small state have played a big role in protecting national dignity. Thus, they have created values that shall not get inundated by moods of the moment due to their timeless appeal. Doughty Indian soldiers epitomize this sentiment, more than anything else. Hopefully, the coming generations would honor them by emulating their example. This focused account of the regional history of a national phenomenon will be of interest to teachers, scholars, soldiers as well as to the defence welfare policymakers.

Migration of Labour in India

Migration of Labour in India PDF Author: Himmat Singh Ratnoo
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317333403
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 283

Book Description
Migration – both within and between countries – is increasingly one of the world's most important policy issues. The faster the Indian economy grows, the larger will be the geographical redistribution of the workforce from localities of low to those of high employment growth. Thus, territorial mobility is fundamental both to realizing the full economic potential of India's people and to allowing the population to escape from rural poverty. The book analyses the decisive factors in labour migration. Based upon a thorough and robust examination of migrants to three slum localities of Delhi stretching over four decades, the author examines why people migrate, the circumstances of their decision and their experience at their destination. He investigates the myths of urban policy – that "rural development" will reduce migration to the cities, that "growth poles" can be created to divert migrant flows, and that government has the power to influence significantly migration scales and directions while pursuing essentially unpredictable market-driven economic growth. Testing the essential theoretical basis for urban policy in India, the book is of interest to academics studying migration of labour and urbanization, and those interested in South Asian Studies.
