Cells: Molecules and Mechanisms

Cells: Molecules and Mechanisms PDF Author: Eric Wong
Publisher: Axolotl Academic Publishing
ISBN: 0985226110
Category : Biology

Pages : 283

Book Description
"Yet another cell and molecular biology book? At the very least, you would think that if I was going to write a textbook, I should write one in an area that really needs one instead of a subject that already has multiple excellent and definitive books. So, why write this book, then? First, it's a course that I have enjoyed teaching for many years, so I am very familiar with what a student really needs to take away from this class within the time constraints of a semester. Second, because it is a course that many students take, there is a greater opportunity to make an impact on more students' pocketbooks than if I were to start off writing a book for a highly specialized upper- level course. And finally, it was fun to research and write, and can be revised easily for inclusion as part of our next textbook, High School Biology."--Open Textbook Library.

Enzymes of Molecular Biology

Enzymes of Molecular Biology PDF Author: Michael M. Burrell
Publisher: Humana Press
ISBN: 9780896032347
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 370

Book Description
The scientist' s understanding of the cell at the molecular level has advanced rapidly over the last twenty years. This improved understa- ing has led to the development of many new laboratory methods that increasingly allow old problems to be tackled in new ways. Thus the modern scientist cannot specialize in just one field of knowledge, but must be aware of many disciplines. To aid the process of investigation, the Methods Molecular Biology series has brought together many protocols and has highlighted the useful variations and the pitfalls of the different methods. However, protocols frequently cannot be simply taken from the shelf. Thus the starting sample for a chosen protocol may be unavailable in the correct state or form, or the products of the procedure require a different sort of processing. Therefore the scientist needs more detailed information on the nature and requirements of the enzymes being used. This information, though usually available in the literature, is often widely dispersed and frequently occurs in older volumes of journals; not everyone has comprehensive library facilities available. Also many scientists searching out such information are not trained enzymologists and may be unaware of some of the parameters that are important in a specific enzyme reaction.

Cellular Biology of Ectoenzymes

Cellular Biology of Ectoenzymes PDF Author: Georg W. Kreutzberg
Publisher: Springer
ISBN:
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 336

Book Description
Cells do not normally live as single entities but are grouped together in specific functional and structural configurations in various tissues. Intra cellular mechanisms maintain cellular viability and provide the means necessary for their specific cellular functions. The interaction between cells is maintained by mechanisms involving extracellular signalling. Such extracellular mechanisms may include special properties of the cell surface which involve immediate cell contact, but may also represent mechanisms which act at a distance and are mediated via special secretions and/or re ceptors. Recent studies on cell-cell contact have tended to stress cell sur face components directly mediating cellular interactions; the extracellular medium as a metabolically active compartment has been rather neglected. However, it represents a vital medium through which cells communicate, being important in, for example, chemotaxis in primitive organisms, and in devel~ment and in the coordination of multiple functions in multi cellular 0 ganisms. It is not surprising, therefore, that a number of mole cular me anisms have developed together with increasing biological complexi during evolution. Two aspects of the extracellular space have received increasing attention in the last few years. First, several macro molecules such as collagen, laminin and fibronectin have been identified as components of an extracellular matrix giving a structural dimension to the extracellular compartment.

Molecular and Cellular Enzymology

Molecular and Cellular Enzymology PDF Author: Jeannine Yon-Kahn
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642012280
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 809

Book Description
Molecular and Cellular Enzymology addresses not only experienced enzymologists but also students, teachers and academic and industrial researchers who are confronted with enzymological problems during their fundamental or applied research. In this field there is an urgent need for training in order to meet the requirements of both research and industrial endeavours. This book consists of several levels. Practical aspects and elementary explanations are given for the benefit of non-specialists’ and students’ understanding. In order to facilitate the task of students, two typographies have been adopted. The main text corresponds to basic knowledge, whereas text in a smaller font provides more specialised information. Specialists will also find topics more deeply expounded with the principal bibliographic references cited. The bibliography, however, is not exhaustive; the choice includes general books and review articles as well as some specialised articles. In this book, for the first time, the different molecular and cellular aspects of enzymology are presented together. Until now, there has been no book available in which these different aspects are treated in the same volume. In addition, besides the theoretical developments, this book provides a wealth of practical information for experimentalists.
