Dans un contexte économique florissant, le développement des lasers à fibre de haute puissance permet de rendre cette technologie accessible et utile dans plusieurs domaines. Les manufacturiers de lasers doivent sans cesse trouver des méthodes pour améliorer les performances, la fiabilité et la productivité de leurs systèmes afin d'occuper une part importante du marché. L'inscription de réseaux de Bragg fibrés (FBG) dans un segment ininterrompu de fibre de gain permet de faire une cavité laser sans épissure, rendant une telle cavité plus robuste, plus rapide à réaliser et lui conférant une efficacité laser supérieure. Les expériences effectuées ont permis de démontrer qu'il est possible d'inscrire des FBG dans une fibre dopée à l'ytterbium d'une réflectivité assez grande et de pertes par échauffement suffisamment faibles pour assembler une cavité laser émettant une puissance de 538 W avec une efficacité de 77%, la puissance maximale étant limitée par la puissance de pompe disponible. Malgré tout, on trouve par extrapolation que les FBG peuvent avoir un échauffement assez faible pour supporter une émission laser de 1030 W. Par ailleurs, les différentes cavités lasers réalisées ont montré qu'il est difficile de faire une cavité sans épissure en fibre de haute luminosité puisque le filtrage modal par injection ne peut être utilisé. Toutefois, il est possible de faire une cavité laser monomode avec une fibre à large aire modale et le pompage en contra-propagation permet d'atteindre une efficacité laser très élevée de 77% (78% à basse puissance). Les simulations numériques ont permis de comprendre que la distribution de puissance dans la cavité laser génère un échauffement inégal des FBG, rendant nécessaire de prendre des considérations supplémentaires pour éviter le décalage spectral entre les FBG. Néanmoins, le projet a su montrer qu'il est envisageable de commercialiser un laser sans épissure émettant 1 kW dans un avenir rapproché et que la technologie en place permettrait une telle réalisation.
